That's a valid point.  We don't know if these girls are being honest or not.  Handing yourself over to ISIS isn't something you decide to call off after months living with them....

Serbian Chetnik movements are the radicals you never heard about. They did war crimes in '90s and they still exist and have no problem having meetings in both Serbia and Republika Srpska. They join to their Russian orthodox brothers in Ukraine same way some muslims join to IS or any other rebel group against Syrian government.

I don't understand how people are being brainwashed into joining ISIS. What is the group telling them? They make it seem so simple. And if those girls are Muslim, I would assume that they know the true meaning of Islam is not to kill.

It's possible that older goodlooking men seduced them, girls in that age easily fall in love and are very naive. They sold them this false story utopia of perfect islamic state, they make propaganda videos where kids are having fun and getting presents, they say you don't need to work in "Caliphate", you get lots of money and flat when you get married, "Caliphate" protects you etc.

Contrary to what Craig is saying, these girls lived pretty much "western way of life", you can see from their appearance. That means they were never taught the religion. They were most likely looking for a meaning in their life and suddenly started practising and that first rush is what made them to believe to whoever brainwashed them. But they must have known about how dangerous ISIS, IS (whats the difference?) is.  You'd have to be pretty daft to fall for that..  But it is sad.

Well I don't know if they cared about what media says before they left or someone could convince them it's all fake, propaganda. You see, Syrian president Assad is killing sunni muslims (over 200.000) in Syria with a help from Shi'ites, and IS was just one of the rebel groups who fought against Syrian regime. So they(people who joined them) believed they are going to help other muslims. They(IS) were funded by the USA, got hundreds of millions dollars, modern weapons, cars etc and they used all that to create a "Caliphate". Western media started paying attention to them only when they started killing Western captives. They killed a lot more muslims before that, those who oppose their ways.

I was brought up a liberal Christian, and eventually rejected it for atheism. But not before I'd been scared by fundamentalists (including my uncle) who tried to convert me to be Born Again.

Anyone taught that BibleKoran is Word or God, no matter have secular and nominal their parents, is in danger of zealots telling them to take seriously what's in the holy scriptures. Including the more obnoxious and anti-modern parts.

But that is just your case. You don't know what ways they used to convince these girls. Majority of Muslims who practise their religion do believe Qur'an is a word of God but they have never been violent nor they wish to hurt innocent people. Many are taught what is the mainstream muslim belief and what are these sects and what tricks they use.

Bosnian Muslims fought fairly against Serbs and Croats in war, without suicide bombings and terrorist actions, but after the war this type of takfiri/khawaarij ideology came there too. Older muslims never fell for it, but some of the youth did. That's why it's important to learn.
