They could obviously move through it or they wouldn't have been walking through it or been able to run from the bear. I'm still a little confused about your definition of dangerous, what exactly is going to kill people in heavily wooded areas that wouldn't kill them in say, a field next to heavily wooded areas? You can move in heavily wooden area. Apshawa preserve is a heavily wooden area in New Jersey. There are many dangers in the woods. Bears, cats, snakes, spiders, wolves, insects and other people. You can get injured too and it would be harder to find help there. But that doesn't mean people should be afraid of the woods or the animals in there, they just need to know that it's not nature's fault when humans get hurt playing in different environments. I still don't understand why are you turning a discussion about a bear attack into the Danger Olympics. Everyone should be careful in every place. Read up on the local environment (wildlife/geography/etc) in your area, learn what to do if confronted with a precarious situation, become aware of your physical limits, and most of all have fun! Well I just said that it's not safe and you immediately compared it with driving a car. Both things aren't safe, but not dangerous enough to avoid them.
