Bear's aren't very dangerous, these people just didn't know how to handle it. Splitting up and running away from a bear is literally the worst thing you can do. Hiking or camping in heavily wooded areas is not safe at all. Not just because of bears, there are many things that can happen to you in a heavily wooded area. It's easier to prevent a car accident than prevent a bear attack. Highways and cars are made for people safety, woods are not. It is safer than driving in a car, but that doesn't make it safe. It might be contaminated. Going to school? The mall? The movies? Someone might shoot up the place. Going outside? You might get struck by lightning. The beach sounds good? Skin cancer from the sun. Sharks in the ocean. Pieces of rusty metal in the sand, BOOM tetanus. People die mostly because of their own mistakes. This case is no different. Even many jobs are MUCH more dangerous than camping. They could obviously move through it or they wouldn't have been walking through it or been able to run from the bear. I'm still a little confused about your definition of dangerous, what exactly is going to kill people in heavily wooded areas that wouldn't kill them in say, a field next to heavily wooded areas? In fact, remember that black bears are not very hard to kill. If it will take down a deer, it can take a black bear. It's the big brownies you really have to watch out for. A handy firearm like a .30-30 Trapper... ...a 12-gauge with Brenneke slugs... ...a Glock 20... ...or a .357 revolver... ...with hard cast bullets... ...should be adequate for defense against most predators both 2 and 4-legged! And also bear bells and bear spray you should already have, naturally... guns are just in case the bear tries to eat you anyways.
