Gaga: "My integrity as a musician is more important to me than money"

I would agree with you if the music market wasn't going down the toilet.   Interscope and everybody else needs to maximize sales where they can get them.  There is a difference between writing music for sales vs marketing the **** out of it to maximize sales.  Besides, this is standards, not a concept album.

U2 making a deal with Apple, Amanda Palmer using kickstarter, Madonna signing to Live Nation, Radio Head doing the put-however-much-money-you-want-in-my-hat thing, I understand that the industry is scrabeling to figure out how to make money from music.  And as I said, I have no problem with her being interested in making a profit. I just don't like hearing her drone on and on about "music not the bling" while using The Super Deluxe Limited Doritos Black Lable Edition of her new album to promote her secound fragrance. It's dishonest. Admit you are a tycoon, and move on.

She was talking about musical integrity. That's not related. An example of putting money over musical integrity would be if she was paid to mention certain brands in her songs.

She basically said U2, Beyonce & Jay Z cheated the system :deadbanana:

Why do I increasingly feel like there's little love lost between Gaga and Beyonce? They never ever seem to hang out, despite plenty of opportunities ...

Good interview BTW. So nice to have such candid and insightful stuff coming from her. Her interviews around the release of Applause and ARTPOP were a bit weird - I can't put my finger on it. I guess she was just tired and tired of the questions.

Great interview. But in all honesty, the media is never going to change (Sadly). They're either going to post informative-true content, or nasty things that are false. People like the Kardashians or any person who's gotten famous in some form like them thrive off of either of those. People will read it, people will talk about it. The media is a never-ending circle. If we continue to consume, these famous people will continue to thrive and these outlets like TMZ will continue pumping out B.S. I must admit, I was a big fan of Keeping Up and I generally found them entertaining, but as of now I'm just sick of the Kardashians. But they're making money, and me? Ha..

But the whole album release stuff... I'm not sure. She dodged the **** out of that one. I actually loved Bey's release. U2's... not so much. I didn't like the whole "force it on my phone NOW" approach. I still need to get around to deleting it off my phone. Beyoncé gave you a choice; buy it if you want, don't buy it if you don't want it. She just didn't tell anyone about the record prior.

I hope the comment doesn't cause a rift between the two. Gaga tweeted about Bey after the album release and Bey gave Gaga a birthday shoutout earlier this year. I kinda love how those two had a genuine love for each other. You don't usually see that in music between two HUGE female artists, cause everyone's always trying it. I love how candid Gaga is in this, tho. Just waiting for that next pop album. Her new "attitude" seems promising. I just hope it holds up until the album is completely finished! :)

"Pop music is a giant tabloid now" - and that's why I love her.

Beyoncé and Jay Z are selling because people see them as huge celebrities, not artists.

:fail:

A huge performer like Beyoncé. An iconic rapper like Jay Z.

Music's richest couple. Going on tour. Together.

A once and a lifetime thing. That's why people went. Hip-Hop has a HUGE following; Jay is a big name in Hip-Hop/Rap, if not the biggest name. Beyoncé attracts a lot of casual fans including her own fanbase because, you know... because she can sing? So seeing them together performing their collaborations including solo hits is a pretty cool thing. I was impressed seeing them live. People who buy their tickets know they're musicians, they're not just spending $150+ on tickets just to see if they're going to fight on stage. They didn't get famous because they acted like fools for the public, they got famous cause they are good at what they do; Raping and Singing.

Let's not talk-down their success as if they are only famous because of the recent tabloid-centric articles about them. If that's the case, the Kardashian family could sell out every stadium in the United States Ã¢â‚¬â€¹just because they're celebrities.

:smh:

She's not. She already discussed the fact that "labels don't have any ****ing money nowadays" due to the way the market has gone the past few years. She understands that labels have to get money any way they can and that sponserships at SXSW are the only way the young, unknown acts could get a chance. Gaga isn't droning on and on about "music not the bling". Her fans are. They don't pay attention to the complete line.

I try to sell myself but I am really laughing, Because I just love the music, not the bling

Gaga knows that she is trying to sell herself and she knows she has to, in order to make her label happy. She may not really get into the business side of her career that much, but she is smart enough to know how it all works and to understand the position that the labels are currently in.

There is nothing dishonest about it at all. She LOVES the music, not the money. The money is necessary, not her love or her motivation. Some doctors are in the medical profession for the money and helping people is the by-product. Some doctors want to help people more than anything and the money is secondary. Same with Gaga and music...she loves music first and the money is secondary.

AP: Did your disagreements with management affect the making of "ARTPOP"?

Gaga: It certainly affected my mind during "ARTPOP." I would have to say that whole situation had less to do with creativity differences and more to do with me really needing some time from myself to be creative. My schedule was way too difficult, I was not able to keep up and my whole business became very focused on making as much money as possible as quickly as possible, which is really not where my heart is. My integrity as a musician is so much more important to me than money. ... While I was making "ARTPOP," I was very tired. I'm actually very proud of "ARTPOP." As much as it's had a lot of criticism, I think a lot of that had to with where I am in my career, I've been on top for a long time, I think it's the nature of this industry  we love to build them up to tear them down.

AP: U2 released its new album alongside Apple, and Jay Z and Beyonce also released recent albums in unconventional ways. What do you think about that and do you think of innovative ways to release music when readying a project?

Gaga: I think honestly what we need to be doing, and this is my opinion, is instead of trying to find ways to trick the world into focusing on the album for a brief moment, I think that artists need to speak more about how media treats the artists and making the distinction between the celebrity and the artist, because everything is all in one pool now isn't it? We're all the same and they're some pretty terrible celebrities out there, let's be honest, right? People famous for no reason. So, I think the more the media can help us to support the artist and support music in a way that's maybe less critical for journalists that are not as knowledgeable about music and help to just spread the music and see the music as gift to the world.

I really believe that once the press becomes more kind I think a lot of the things in the universe are going to change. It makes me scared when I hear that there's pro-ISIS (Islamic State in Syria) rallies in America because I think that social media has created this sort of negative undertone in the universe. People feel that they can say or do anything; it makes them feel a sort of comfort when really it's just giving hatred a petri dish to fester. I know that was sort of a random answer for a question about album marketing. I really believe it lies in the hearts in the people that are writing about the music. The more we honour and support the artist, the more the art will live on forever. Otherwise, it's going to continue to be what I think pop music is now, which is sort of this giant tabloid. It's become quite trashy in my opinion.

These segments really helped opened up the whole situation to me. Nice read.

I loved how clear she was with her situation. I am loving her new atittude, I hope she keeps it this way! She has learned from the past and that's the best thing someone gets from life experiences. Very excited for what it is to come.

Exactly. As long as everyone keeps clicking on these stories and generating ad revenue these sites are just going to keep publishing them. I also think the 24 hour news cycle contributes to this - the media is forever trying to keep up and provide new content to the point where celebrity gossip from TMZ is ends up being discussed on places like CNN. This also brings to mind the way that $25 million rumor got circulated around to normally reputable publications without any fact checking at all. It's clear they were trying to fill their site up and get some more hits even if it was a complete lie.

She's not. She already discussed the fact that "labels don't have any ****ing money nowadays" due to the way the market has gone the past few years. This. It seems everyone likes to ignore the line before ~music not the bling. Whether we or Gaga herself like it or not, she's has to be a sellout to a certain degree to play the mainstream pop star role.

She was talking about musical integrity. That's not related. An example of putting money over musical integrity would be if she was paid to mention certain brands in her songs.

I feel like a better example would be working with the newest, hottest artists of the moment (J.Lo and Iggy on Booty) and the usual hit makers like Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Mike Will etc. to ensure your music will fit in perfectly with everyone else's to ensure profit. Similar to the movie business when everyone tries to cash in on a successful trend, like found footage horror movies.

Gaga has talked about her management team and some others that were surrounding her, not about Interscope. Other than saying they altered her vocals to make her sound more pop, she has said nothing but good things about them. Her label weren't the ones treating her badly, it was Troy.

I'm sure they just smile over the comment about changing her vocals...as they rake the millions of dollars she is making them into their pockets! :haha:
