Its and old problems... I would say that 200 years ago, the idea of voting for independence was completely Ludacris... Now, Scottish independence is equally Ludacris for the opposite reason... both would be weaker for the separation...

Finally, a weight has been lifted and it's back to normality. Stayed up all night to hear the result and was surprised at how accurate the running polls had been up to this point and that it really was true - the 500,000 who were supposedly undecided really did hold the key to who would win, as 500,000 was the difference between votes. It was telling how Clackmannanshire was the first to announce results and said no, even though they were the constituency rated most likely to vote yes. And then there was a further 5 in a row constituencies who ruled the same. And despite these constituencies being really small and there still being 26 to go, already Yes supporters were reluctantly admitting defeat and the writing was on the wall. I'm interested to know why Glasgow only had a 75% turnout, the lowest of all constituencies, even though it's the biggest. And I'm flabbergasted that only 4/32 constituencies voted yes. Glasgow and Dundee were a given, but even they didn't win as spectacularly as predicted. Lots of surprising no's from Clackmannanshire, Inverclyde, Fife, Highlands and Scottish Borders as those places had massive SNP support and Yes stickers in windows. I was slightly disappointed that my constituency, West Dumbartonshire, voted yes, which I knew was going to happen, but there was only 5000 votes difference. And I would have preferred the end result to be No  60% and Yes 40%, but I can deal with a 10% difference. Much better than the outcome from Quebec, with only 54,000 votes of a difference at their 1995 referendum.

 

I am pleased that my country decided it was not worth the risk and uncertainty. It was clear that any plans from the SNP were not going to be announced until after the result, which was ridiculous as no one really knew what to expect from a yes vote. It also proves that the silent majority should never be underestimated. It always seemed as if the Yes side had more supporters due to the numerous Yes stickers in windows and cars, people wearing Yes badges, the number of followers Yes Scotland had on FB and Twitter, the amount of advertising, branding, campaigning and rallying Yes voters were doing. Because there was visual evidence of its supporters, it made you believe that independence was a foregone conclusion. But the problem is that No voters were much quieter and preferred not to tell their views to anyone for fear of causing arguments. They were afraid to put a No sticker in their window for fear it would get smashed. Their campaign's pamphlets and booklets posted through doors were much more sparse and simplistic, produced at a lower cost. There was no desire to go overboard with campaigning or bother people at the polling stations. It was the Yes campaigners (not all, but a lot) who were committing vandalism and harrassing anyone who disagreed with them, which made people irritated and even fearful that these could be the people determining their future and playing a role in an independent Scotland. The funny thing was that Alex Salmond declared days before the vote that the No campaign was losing ground and becoming desperate, when it was the Yes campaign that displayed all the classic desperation tactics. Now he's just resigned as even his birth constituency of West Lothian and his home constituency of Aberdeenshire voted No. Truly you can never assume anything and believing that you've won just because of visual evidence means you'll lose.

 

Here's hoping we move forward into a better union with the UK. Already the value of the pound has increased since last night. Let's stand alongside our family, friends and colleagues from all over the UK and say: we're in this together.
