As you can see Taylor is following the same schedule this year, Miley followed that schedule last year as well. Applause and Roar only released the same week because Applause leaked. You don't remember well, Roar was on the top of the charts after weeks and Gaga decides to release her second single DWUW! What does Capitol and Katy do - of course release Unconditionally RIGHT AWAY even though there were no plans for it... The album was never going to be dark, Katy is way too safe and she changed directions when she got over the divorce depression.
