We're talking about vocal abilities, not dancing abilities. And yes, the album was supposed to be dark. That's what she said for a very long time. But the problem was she fell madly in love with John Mayer. A whole dark album would not have played authentic. Katy and her team planned the entire PRISM era around ARTPOP, knowing this is Gaga's low point and using the comparisions to build Katys image up. She's one of the most manipulative people in the industry. OMG!
