So if you're 21 years or older, McDonald's would not want to hire you because you cost too much for doing the same job as a 16-year-old. LOL Check the Australian wage page. What the.... Btw, 15 dollars an hour at full time would be like 31,200 a year and I doubt many fast food workers do full time. That would be very generous. If McDonalds would only pay employees around 9.60 dollars an hour, at full time, they would make about 20,000 a year. I think 9 to 10 dollars a hour would at least is reasonable for that skill level, from stores to restaurants, and warehouse workers. Stand in the light, cast your shadow. No one is advising to pay them $60,000 a year, but the minimum wage needs to be raised. And that's not only in the US, but in many countries. Here in the UK, the minimum wage for over 21 yr olds is £6.50 ($10.51), which is not enough by far, especially in London. Luckily, parties like The Greens are advocating a raise to a minimum wage of £10 and hour ($16.19), which is popular with many voters here and so fingers crossed it'll come about sooner than later. People always argue that if you put the minimum wage up, then companies will have to put up prices of their products to offset the expenditure on wages. However, when people have more money, that means they are gonna have more disposable income to spend on stuff, which would n turn increase revenue for the companies. But I'm no economist. The minimum wage for all jobs needs to be lifted, but I'm doubting it's gonna happen any time soon. At least not a significant lift anyway. If I own a McDonald's, I would only hire 15 and 16 years old during the evenings and weekends so I can save a lot of money, but hire 17 and 18 years old for the dayshift during school days. Yes, that's what I just said - when you turn 18, they look for ways to cut your shifts = so they can hire younger people. They still do have adults working too, just not so many after school. But in the night time and opening they can't just have 15 year olds there, and during the day they must have more adults because teenagers are at school (well hopefully they are). LOL But this guy gave like half of the money away Anyways, raising minimum wages isn't as effective in fighting poverty as you guys make it seem. And would just piss off all the people who were already making way above minimum wage, as they are still making the same salary, but everything has increased in price.... There will always be a huge gap in income between skilled professionals and people working no skill jobs in stores and restaurants.it would make a difference for them actually. Cause the effect is dilluded as u go up the chain Labor costs dont make up 100% of operation costs and most ppl who dont make above minimum wage wont get an equivalent hike if its raised If minimum wage is risen 20% inflation wont be 20% so they will benefitSay for example minimum wage is raised from $7/hour to $10/hour. People who were already making $10 might just get a raise to $12 or whatever their boss decides. People making $15 might get a raise to $16. By the time you get to people making $20/hour they may get no raise when minimum wage is increased The effect gets diluded the further up the chain u go so the more money u make, the more the inflation from higher minimum wage hurts you so it is an equalizer. Also, again, operating costs of a business are not just workers pay so some costs wont change Basically a modest increase in minimum wage wouldnt cause that much inflation just a little.
