cosmicPOPdream 4
if this was Gaga's first album people would be PRAISING IT TO THE HEAVENS People have become somewhat used to the fact that Gaga is the most innovative, avant garde musician/performer/artist in the entire world, not exclusive to music so people are unfortunately not very surprised at this point and also many people could never understand some of the basic concepts of the album/"project". In short, ARTPOP is ahead of its time and is not a flop because Gaga will always be 10 steps ahead.
SKYER 2
If were talking money, no. If were talking a commercially marketable album as a whole, maybe Is that a bad thing? not necessarily
WhoAskedOpinions 658
It did not "flop". It did very well compared to many artists, but when you have Gaga... it's hard to top what she has done. ARTPOP has done very well, but when people compare it to different albums, you don't see the success as much. I bet she would be happy if she sold 1 million albums instead of 2 million! She just loves it when people buy her music for her. @WhoAskedOpinions - Rates, reviews, and rankings of music and TV shows
MelbHawker 6,583
The album didn't flop. It's a such a shame that the media has branded it a failure - that seems to be the general consensus regarding the album however it pretty much went #1 Worldwide and has sold over 2 million copies.. that's an amazing accomplishment! The singles however.. yes, they flopped. The single eras were just so messy. Rush releases, no videos for singles, not enough promo. After the mess that was the DWUW single era (which amounted to nothing for the epic masterpiece that is DWUW).. there was no coming back to slay. GUY was a solid attempt at trying to - the video was insane - but yeah, it ran out of steam. Applause was the only single that did well.
Noam Zioni 1,196
No. And everybody who says she's a flop is a flop himself.
Silence 0
Does it really matter if it sold much or didn't? I mean it won't change the quality of the music. It's really annoying to see how pop culture fans are so obsessed with sales and charts. When different fanbases argue against each other, they mostly use sales and chart positions against each other but why? Is every #1 song better than all other less successfull songs? Does an artist have to be at the top to be good? Ofcourse it's nice if your favorite artist is well known and successfull, but when you're established in the media, it really shouldn't matter at all. Besides that, it didn't do as well as Born This Way and for her standards it might be a flop, but that shouldn't change how you view ARTPOP as an album/era. Neptune 156
Huge underperformance. Not a flop. It's not a huge underperformance when you have in count the fact that every year album sales drop 11%. To have an album that is platinum these days is actually good. hell0samuel 60
it probably under performed in the sense of longevity. it had a fairly decent opening week/s but then dropped fast and hard. It wasnt promoted continually due to manager issues and I think if there wasnt these issues it would have stood a better chance
Koala 3
No, it was not a flop.
Creyk 17,805
I think that it flopped in the sense that it became something completely different than what Gaga wanted it to be
Neptune 156
it's funny how people used to say how MDNA was such a flop and yet it has sold more than ARTPOP and had less promo but now people say ARTPOP did not flop OK......... Anyway flop or not, it's still disappointing because this is just her 4th album, people say things like you can't expect her to be on top 4ever, that's true but damn that doesn't mean she has to fall THAT HARD in sales MDNA was released in early 2012. ARTPOP was released in late 2013. Album sales decreased dramatically within that time span because of the increase in streaming. But, yes, ARTPOP failed creatively. Gaga knows this most of all. But we know this because we scrutinize every little detail of a Gaga album. At least she tried to make it unique. ARTPOP will go down as the album as the album that tried to make a statement about art, pop, the artist, and the audience. What exactly was the creative intent of MDNA? It's just another Madonna album. Britney Jean was just another Britney album. There's no creative intent here except to put out another album. Benji 20,113
Flop? No. Underperform? Yes, considering Gaga was going from success to success, ARTPOP did underperform.
XoXoJoanneGaga 629
I would say it did flop in the US, cause it's like 300k short of platinum. It did okay WW, all things considered.
Whispering 18,865
As Gaga said at SXSW: "We’ve sold over 2 ½ million copies of ARPOP all over the world. I’m sorry I didn’t sell a million in one week. I have before. I’m very proud of what we did. It’s so insane. I’m held to such an insane standard. It’s almost like everyone forgets where the music business is now. Making that record [ARTPOP] was...it healed my soul every single night. It’s the most incredible thing when your friend can play a bass line that gets in your spirit and your heart like that. I was feeling so sick and then he played that and I feel so alive. I feel like I could keep going and then the words start to come and then the poetry. It becomes a song and everyone in the room has an experience that is encapsulated into an auditory moment that last forever. It’s like, that’s what the **** it’s all about." No, it wasn't a flop. PinkBalloons 0
I don't think ARTPOP flopped, it performed like you'd expect electropop to perform, the style of music isn't popular anywhere but America. You can't make people buy music that's not popular worldwide or culturally relevant.
