Jesse Pinkman 4,660
Just because he's gay doesn't mean he has to go and write gay anthems.and perform at pride or whatever y'all want. Being gay shouldn't define you, or your public persona. It's science, bitch
Robotboy 1,700
thats completely understandable. i respect the people who fight for equality and i love gaga for it and all, but it's also good to be like sam. just be whoever you want to be and the world will see how he is just like everyone else tbh. i dont know if you get what i mean but i dont really care Remember that you are unique. Like everyone else.
DontDoubtDavid 1,185
Why are you implying negative connotations towards what he said? There's nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. He's a singer who happens to be gay. He's not trying to make a statement and not trying to change the world. He's just a normal person trying to make a living off of what he loves. I don't see why people feel the need for him to make it more than what it is.
yourfaves 317
Here's the breakdown of why Sam Smith (or anyone really) will never get it right according to the people on the internet. Declines wanting to be a spokesperson - "omg how selfish, c'mon dude help your community, you coward" Decides to be spokesperson - "omg he's exploiting his s-xuality for attention, he doesn't speak for me, he's not qualified, he should just stick to music" --- Dresses in a suit and tie - "omg he's repressing his s-xuality for mass appeal, he's a coward, he should just be himself" Dresses flamboyantly - "omg he's so flaming, such a bad misrepresentation of our community, us normal gays exist too" --- In conclusion, let the ****ing guy do what he wants. Ya'll hoes kill me.

Ya'll hoes kill me. no no no There's this weird dichotomy that you have to be one extreme or the other. No one in this tread has ever said be a giant rainbow flag everywhere you go. Just an acknowledgement here and there would be NICE not REQUIRED, instead of him having this faux closet it seems he's put himself in of ever addressing the rainbow elephant in the room. And if anyone says dressing flamboyantly is a hindrance to the "normal gays" then they should be swiftly called out for their ignorance. Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

Chic 20,830
I see the "Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I have to be a gay spokesperson" has translated well into "Just because I'm a singer doesn't mean I have to make good music" because I've had some pretty good ****ing indications of that, I dunno about you I don't want this annoying little man to be the face of the LGBT community. Like his voice didn't out him to the idiotic people who believe that he's perpetuating a stereotype with that already :reductive: I bet there'd be more genuine emotion in hearing his eyeliner from 5 years ago singing "Stay With Me"

Cersei 56
I'm not going to force a role on someone that they're not comfortable embodying. Furthermore, he's openly gay. It's not like he's hiding in the closet. Honestly, wouldn't it be refreshing to have someone who just happens to be gay rather than is the new face of LGBT? I think we're getting really close to that time. He has no interest in being the "gay singer". He'd rather be a singer who happens to be gay. I think that's great. When will we stop forcing people into roles simply based on their s-xual orientation? Sorry to backtrack unfortunately, whether the people of this world like it or not. Being Gay is still a big deal, it's become unpopular to admit it. But the reason why news report "comings out" of celebrities and stuff, is because people still see it as a news AKA a big deal. Unfortunately he's forced into that role because Lack of openly gay singers = you become a "gay singer" It's a double edged sword, and it ****ing sucks But good on you, I like your opinion, it's a good one. petty 9,412
maybe when he says "normal" he's commenting on how people make you feel like you're not normal when you come out as gay. i'm not sure it was in a way to offend the gay community. I'm pretty sure he knows it's normal to be gay since he was born gay, but it's very tiring to have to continually explain or comment on your s-xuality as if it's not normal.
