As a singer who came out publicly before the release of his debut album  which includes love songs written from the point of view of a gay man  Sam Smith is blazing a trail as an out gay singer currently enjoying massive mainstream success. However, that doesn’t mean the young superstar is interested in being a spokesperson for all queer people.

“I'm not trying to be a spokesperson,†he told Digital Spy during a recent interview. “It sounds awful of me, but I'm really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That's what I do. I'm not trying to heal the world. From a young age I've always been like this, so it's been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I'm not going to stop that now.â€

It's not like it's his job or something. I respect it, if it's his decision

But just by being gay and popular he is already helping.

He's a musician, people care about his music, he doesn't need to do anything else.

Why are you implying negative connotations towards what he said? There's nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. He's a singer who happens to be gay. He's not trying to make a statement and not trying to change the world. He's just a normal person trying to make a living off of what he loves. I don't see why people feel the need for him to make it more than what it is.

Absolutely agree with Sam. I like that he doesn't want to be placed inside a box and be a stereotype. Just because you're gay as a person shouldn't mean it makes you only a gay spokesperson as Sam describes. Like the only example I can think of is Freddie Mercury. I would bring up David Bowie but he's supposedly not bis-xual anymore?

I dont really like Sam Smith tbh his music and voice dont appeal to me. it seems to me he has really downplayed his s-xuality on purpose for mass appeal. I mean i know everyone isnt a flaming queen but when you look at his old twitter and stuff he just seems so subdued now. He seems to get annoyed when asked about being gay and relation to his music too, and for me its like of course it might be annoying getting asked about your s-xuality all the time, but this is the music industry where things are brought up over and over again. I mean how many times did gaga have to explain where 'Lady Gaga' came from, that she wasnt a man, what her inspirations are etc.

Although this is just my perception of him, i dont know him personally so i could very well be wrong

His s-xuality shouldn't be the first thing to distinguish him by. He doesn't have to be a walking colorful flag that's not his job

You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

He wants to be a singer, not a gay singer. It's like how someone would rather be a "best friend" instead of a "gay best friend" or would rather get married instead of "gay married". He doesn't want his s-xuality to define him and that's a good thing imo.
