Extremely surprising considering her singles chart positions and promo tour with the VMA's the night before, sad because it's actually a strong album IMO.

She doesn't have any solo singles - all her success is based on collabs.

Not bad. People here always want to drag new artists, we all know how pop album declined nowadays. :)

Only ~30k more than her debut with 3 Top 10's?
This is not good and anyone that thinks this is good for her 2nd album, when it produced not only more hits but bigger hits than her previous record, obviously isn't looking at the facts.

Ariana is a singles artist. I don't see this album being a hit outside of what it's already done, with Problem, Break Free + Bang Bang.

So, Gaga had a #4 lead single (Applause) and a #8 promo single (Dope) and despite these underperformances, got a 258k opening week...and Ariana, with a #2 lead single plus a further two singles at #4 and #6, all simultaneously, is aiming for a 170k opening week, tops? And Gaga was going through a hard time when she pulled these figures with her popularity in a downward spiral, plus at nearly 28, she was getting on a bit for a current popstar. But Ariana's career has barely started, she's in her peak right now and she's only 21 (but looks much, much younger) and every girl wants to be her and every boy wants to date her. She's got vocal talent, popularity, radio support, mainstream music appeal, youth and conventional attractiveness on her side...so why isn't she pulling spectacular opening figures? No, I'm not buying it that this is just the state of the sales climate right now. When artists have successful singles, they get amazing opening weeks and the public are willing to pay for their music. I just think, for whatever reason, people don't think her complete albums are worth buying. It's a shame because My Everything is a huge improvement on her beyond mediocre debut. But the critics don't seem to think so, giving it noticeably more lukewarm reviews. Now with streaming and her entire album being uploaded to YouTube, people can check out the full product before they buy. And judging by these figures, they just didn't think it was up to scratch.

everybodys just different,so it makes no sense to compare them.  rihanna is huge but her albums sales are just like arianas also. thats where the term singles artist actually applies

What an unfair comparison. ARTPOP was released when Gaga is already an established artist or even called an album seller.

Why not compare it to The Fame Monster or The Fame? All of these pop albums started at slow momentum.

The fact that album sales have been declining much since 2010 esp. for pop albums.

Unorthodox Jukebox is the only pop album that was released since 2012 to cross 2M in sales although it only debuted less than 200K.

That's not a bad start for Ariana. She can pull a Rihanna type of success.

I thought she'd open with over 200k. Good for her anyways, 2 number one albums in a row is quite an achievement in today's pop music scene!

Her last three albums are at 1.7 million, 1.1 and 1.1 million. That's an album seller. Ariana will be doing good if she can come close to 1.1 million.

Last three albums: 207K, 198K, and 238K.

These albums also ended up at 5.7, 4.5 and 3 million worldwide. I would say she is an album seller. :)
