As sad as it is to say, this was the instructor's failure, not the law's. 

Not true - if the law did not allow people to have guns in the first place, this would be less likely to happen. How many shootings like this do you see in Australia? Basically NONE because people aren't as freely allowed guns here... and yes I realise there will still be some gun violence here, it's not gonna end it all, but like you just don't get that sort of sh*t happening here.

I'm not going to lie, I don't understand the need for using guns at any age- but particularly a 9 year old. But it's not my culture and so it's not my place to pass judgement. I feel bad for what that girl will have to live with :(

1. There are more guns in America than people; it doesn't matter what legislation you pass, you're never getting rid of them.

2. Anything can be dangerous when handled by people with poor judgement. Vehicles, for example.

3. The right to bear arms is as American as apple pie. It's a right that's designed as a check against oppressive government. If the government outlawed firearms, there would be rebellion. Rightfully so, in my opinion.

People wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on something they didn't ENJOY. Yup, I guess people spend time customizing expensive hunting rifles because it's a "tool"... nope, it's also a sport and a hobby.

Sorry, this is not "gun violence", it's called an accident. People die skiing too. It's pretty rare to be shot at a gun range, as in: almost never happens.

Parents are advised to hide guns in the highest and most secret places, and if they don't, they might be facing something up to jail time (or simply a fine). But does it even matter when they're going to be encouraged to learn how to use a gun.  :roll:

If they learn how to use it properly, maybe they won't shoot themselves... and kids are more likely to go searching for guns if it's something mysterious, exciting and unknown ("forbidden fruit"). If it's just the rifle they shoot with Dad every second Sunday they won't be trying to steal it.

Apparently it is legal to allow an 8 year old to handle a gun here. What's next, a rocket launcher? I shake my head at the laws and whomever thinks it is OK for a child to handle a lethal weapon.

The topic of 'guns' in America is so touchy for gun-enthusiasts.

 

I'll never understand the obsession people have with them, but they have a right to own them. But some tend to take matters into their own hands and think they're the next Texas ranger. That's the problem we have. I'm just not a fan of guns. I shot a little BB gun at a few cans and It still felt wrong. Maybe it's the scary thoughts of shooting myself in the face. lol Just something I'll never find interest in. 

 

Regardless, even if I had tons of guns ranging from different makes and models, I would never allow my 9 year old child to hold one. That's beyond insane.

I'm from this country and I just want to say that I agree with everyone's sentiments.  Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that drastically wants the gun laws in this country to change, and that's lonely thinking here.  It may be American culture, but I don't adopt or practice it.  I certainly don't accept it and every time I hear stories like this, I feel more and more desolate.  I've already resigned myself to the fact if I'm ever faced with a gunman, I'm going to die and I've made peace with that.  I will not pick up a gun.  I've never touched a gun and won't start, now more on principle than anything.  I won't become a part of the problem.  I wish I knew what to do.  :(

 

I can't wrap my head around why this girl's parents would have wanted her to use such a gun, or any gun.  The instructor should have been aware of the dangers as well.  The adults in this situation are at fault, and now the girl will have this on her conscience for the rest of her life.  Another wounded mind thanks to the barrel end of a gun.  Condolences to the family of the instructor.  Terrible all the way around.
