Here in Canada each Province does too. But since in Canada it was the Supreme Court of Canada that ruled in favour of the LGBT, Provincial Supreme Courts cant unrule it

If individuals hadnt challanged it who knows how much longer it would of taken.

Individual same-s-x marriages have been happenig here since the 1980s (first same s-x marriage in modern times was in Canada). Each time it was individuals that challanged their rights to the Supreme Court and won way before it became legal Nation-Wide

And even when it became legal Nationwide in 2005 the Supreme Court of Canada had a hand in that too

Needless to say, i trust the Supreme court to protect our human rights more than the Government itself :awkney:

Yes and no. The court system in the US is a little more complicated than that. Each state has their lower courts and courts of appeal and yes, each state does have their own Supreme Court, but there is still one central Supreme Court.

 

In multiple states, cases for marriage equality have been moving through the lower court system. Usually what happens is the judge of each court will stay their ruling while the case is appealed to the next high court, meaning the ruling doesn't make any changes to the actual laws until a higher judge decides on the case. But even though each state has their own "supreme court", that doesn't mean that it is necessarily the highest court before you get to the Federal Supreme Court because each "district" (comprised of multiple states) has its own District Court. 

 

So basically, a judge would issue a stay if they knew that the case was going to be appealed because they don't want marriage to suddenly be accessible for same s-x couples and then have it taken away by a higher judge. But sometimes the Supreme Court will step in and issue an emergency stay on a lower court if the judge fails to issue a stay.

Im not sure how it works here. I know theres the lower courts, the Provincial Supreme Court and the Federal supreme Court but in our case only the Federal Court got involved

I dont know much about the justice and court system even in my Country tbh

Complicated stuff tho. Hopefully the US will be fully equal one day :yes:
