Which peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100... :awkney:  She's never had a #1 single - actually, no song of hers has charted higher than #8 on the main chart. At the time Bruno performed, despite being a much newer artist, he already had 4 Hot 100 #1 singles.

Yes, Carrie is an iconic country star and I'm sure someday she'll have the status of like Dolly Parton (although not as a writer - she hasn't penned anything like Jolene or I Will Always Love You). However, she doesn't have the type of iconic or extremely popular and well known songs that the predominantly male fans of the NFL who comprise most of the viewers would know.

She is beautiful. That's enough for them.

She had one #1 on the Hot 100, Inside Your Heaven.  But that was right after she won American Idol.

That was a total fluke because of American Idol - she had just won and the show hit its peak in power then. She hasn't even come close to achieving #1 as a solo singer since then.

I honestly don't know who she is but she seems the kind of person who would only sing the national anthem before the game. :rip:

A good point. Whenever something scandalous happens on American tv, the networks suddenly come over all conservative on us to get the population back to a feeling of safety and security again. That was definitely the case concerning the whole JT/Janet Nipplegate at the Superbowl. The organisation has feared anything so controversial happening ever again. It explains why they still haven't asked Gaga to perform even though she's the most obvious candidate seeing as she's one of the most praised performance artists of our time and her live voice and instrumental skills do not go un-noted. At the end of the day, they're terrified that someone so pro-gay and so supportive of s-xuality might do something that'll make Nipplegate look like small fry. But then, they let Madonna perform, so...

It's important to note that from Like A Virgin in 1985 (when she became a megastar) through the Erotica/Sex period in 1992 and several years afterward because of the backlash the NFL NEVER would have asked her to do the Halftime Show because she was so controversial. It was only after she became a mother and toned down her image in the late 90s/early 2000s that the NFL considered asking her and did a few times until she finally accepted in 2012.

Gaga is at that point right now - until she tones down her image and becomes less outrageous and "weird", they're not going to ask her to do it. However, I'm sure that at some point in the next few decades Gaga will do it as long as she remains contemporary and relevant. Also, I really don't think homophobia is as big of an issue in the NFL and their choices as it would have been a decade or two ago because the country has changed and they now have Michael Sam, etc - the issue with Gaga is more concerns about whether she could put on a broadly popular, family friendly show, so basically no blood or puking.

She is beautiful. That's enough for them.

That's good and all until they're bored to death of her female-centric ballads after two minutes. Also, she's not going to go out there looking like a Cowboys cheerleader or, god forbid, Janet Jackson - it's going to be a very wholesome, non provocative show.

You were just complaining that she didn't have a #1.... Plus country songs hardly ever get that close to the top unless they get backed by mainstream radio...  Her album however was the best selling album on the Top 200 for a year or so in 2007. Over 7 Million copies in the US alone.  She's still the best female country artist out there right now.

I'm sure she'll have someone perform with her, do a few duets.

She's definitely the best female country singer right now, but she doesn't have the crossover appeal that Shania Twain or Faith Hill had at their peaks.

i've read somewhere that in therm of % of the population, Canadians watch more the SB than america it's crazy

Just playing devil's advocate, but doesn't Canada actually have a big country music market? I've heard that the central and western provinces are similar to the American Midwest in their culture and tastes. There are also a couple of major Canadian musicians with country influences in their work like Shania Twain.

She does, but she has said that she doesn't want to take that route.  She has tried it in the past, but I feel her appeal is more Celine Dion ish.  More vocal than spectacle.  Which I think is fine.

Ah okay that's what I thought thanks

Has the Super Bowl ever had a primarily vocal performance like that though? It can be incredible in the context of an awards show or ceremony like the Grammys, but I don't know if it would work in the context of a major football game.

Also, now that I think about it, I'm amazed they haven't had Celine Dion do it yet lol.

The question was answered once already but the point I would like to make is there is more people in the state of California than all of Canada. The USA is much more of a Country music lover although Canadians have their share of Country musicians and influences.

Mars..........or bust!

Not sure.  But in terms of the performance I mentioned before that there could be a lot of visuals and other things happening while she sings.  Somewhat like the Olympics when they have singers.  Carrie does have the ability to entertain, and she does have many songs that would work well with the halftime show.
