Whispering 18,865
So wait they're announcing the name of the cop? How will that help with the unrest I don't get it tbh and wtf Anonymous for getting the wrong guy now he's in danger They always release the name of the police officer. Not doing so only makes it look like they have something to hide. Secrecy makes people suspicious. It gives the impression that there is some kind of cover up going on, even if there isn't. When you give people information, you give the impression that you are working towards finding the truth. (whether it is accurate or not)
Whispering 18,865
Highway Patrol takes seizes control of Ferguson; showing small signs of hope. Leading Highway Patrol is ironically a Black man who's allowing protestors to do their thing in a respectful manner. He's allowing them to express their opinions without having to be violent. Last night you saw several Ferguson officers still getting physical with peaceful protestors. I feel with the leader of highway patrol, he understands what's going on (in a personal manner) and he's allowing them to let out their concerns. Hopefully tonight isn't nearly as horrible as the past five. Above is a patroller talking with young men in Ferguson! A big question coming out today is why in the world the Ferguson Police Department is 95% White, while its residents are 60% Black? Do they not allow Black people on the force, or something? Also, there is only one woman on the entire force, 62% of the residents in the city I live in are Black. Black police officers make up 52% of the force. Also, 20% of the police force are females. I find it very strange that the Ferguson police force is basically all White males.
No Angel 128
I find it literally disgusting that this is such a "thing". I remember being stopped and harassed by police in the street when I was younger (around 15) and being so confused.Looking back at it, they could have ruined my life completely if they wanted to because as a young black man I am not afforded the assumption of "innocence" or "humanity" for that matter. These riots and these outbursts are the results of black people constantly being told that we're "exaggerating" or that our struggles are basically not valid. EVEN NOW in the midst of all of this, they're doing everything they can to silence black voices, it's just getting exposure because the media is going against Ferguson's wishes. Well that's just my rant for the evening. This is what I was trying to get at in the first place regarding the police and how people are so quick to blame the victim in it all. It keeps happening over and over and not by coincidence. It's happened to my father when he was walking home from work around my age. A police officer thought he was responsible for a burglary. My dad would usually walk home at night so he carried a knife just in case someone bad would try to approach him.. which made things worse. Luckily, he was let out quickly when they found out he was not the guy who did it. This is a repeated cycle for many people, specifically Black men and I pray to god it doesn't happen to me. As black men, ignorant people expect us to act like wild animals or thugs as if that's the default personality. It's sickening, but if you ever try to explain yourself... "you're complaining" or the most frustrating excuse, "maybe you should have not looked suspicious." It's so easy for people to blame the victim, y'know? But the people who haven't had an experience like this or have lived a life where crime was never a problem will usually look at the cop as the good guy. (Not excluding any other people who have had rough run ins with police, cause it happens all the time; I can only speak from my experiences) It's just nice seeing people across the globe rally behind Michael Brown. Cool seeing all kinds of people get behind it, which makes others feel welcomed. Edited August 15, 2014 by No Angel
Shadow 6,697
I think it finally ended. We're not out of the woods yet, bud. Let it be known: In Ferguson, there are 53 cops. 3 of them are black. Huge imbalance. I feel like for the community to have a close relationship with them, you have to "relate" to them in a way, if that makes sense (?) And I think if a community with such a large chunk of Black people doesn't have that, I don't think they can identify with them or have some sort of connection on a personal level. It's a weird topic. It's strange seeing Ron Johnson of the Highway Patrol take over and watching the live CNN interview where the people (majority of who were Black) were standing behind him chanting and smiling. It was a sense of happiness in a way. He allowed them to protest only if it were done in a peaceful manner. He didn't give them a curfew like they were trying to introduce a few nights ago when Ferg. Police had control of it. He told them they could stay as long as they want to, they just needed to act peaceful. And he mentioned "at the end of the day, we're only here for him and we can only move forward." pointing to a picture of Michael Brown. So I hope it all goes well for them. No Angel 128
The night is definitely not over, but the Ferguson streets are actually quieting down at the moment...? I'm not sure if I can believe it or not. Did Highway Patrol really play a role in this?
No Angel 128
I'm constantly checking my feed, but I'm hearing nothing about any major riots, just minor scuffles that were taken cared off safely and effectively. Though this is not the end, it's looking better than the past few nights. Besides that, peaceful chants and celebrations are being heard throughout Ferguson. Ron Johnson made his presence known and people are taking to him well, it seems so far. Here's a tweet from @AntonioFrench: So... 24 Hours later: Highway Patrol seizes control of Ferguson. Leader Ron Johnson talks it out, actually shows his support for the people of Ferguson instead of battling them, and connects with them on a personal level, telling them they aren't alone in this and they are here to support Michael Brown the best way they can. - Though we're not sure if the danger is over, It's looking like if you point a gun at person's face, you're only going to get a negative reaction and that's what's being proven at this moment. So are the Protestors at fault or the so-called "generalized" Police from the nights before? Edited August 15, 2014 by No Angel
thatfoxyfeeling 13,401
If it was a white person shot by a black police officer, would we have the same reaction?
No Angel 128
If it was a white person shot by a black police officer, would we have the same reaction? Well, statistically speaking when it comes to Ferguson's arrests on Black people, he'd most definitely would have gone to jail and we would have known his name the following day. But let's ask the only three Black officers in Ferguson for their opinion on this question... that's if we can find them... y'know cause there's actually only three of them out of the fifty white officers. ;) - But in all seriousness, this is about Michael Brown and Ferguson. If you need information on it, read the OP, look it up online, or leave it alone. I'm tired of people trying to deflect from the topic in this thread. It's about a black teenager being killed, simple as that; I'm not sugarcoating it. If you want to put your precious feelings above a topic that's literally affecting a group of people, myself included, then just get out of this thread and vent someplace else. I'm not trying to get this thread closed again because I genuinely like adding to it and so do other people (who are graciously giving me links to add into the OP) if you couldn't tell.
