It is not all churches/religion... I've been to MANY churches that have gays and lesbians out and in the open. In a recent case, there was a lesbian couple that were friendly, and had great relations with everyone there. It is NOT the churches/religion. It is the people in charge. This is founded on the basic human understanding that one day we too will die, and we too will want to be treated with reverence. In death, we no longer have the ability to preserve our own human dignity, and rely on others to preserve it for us. I think that is reason re:erence for the dead is such an important part of all cultures. By upholding the dignity of those already dead, even if we hated them alive, we are insuring that we will be held in dignity at death. If you accept the authority of the church to bury someone you love, then that church can rightfully make decisions such as these. I think there should be more possibilites to say goodbye to a loved one. People often immediately think of a church service, but this is so old-fashioned and "wrong" from many angles.
