Kenon Astro 0
If you're a literary nerd and are interested in these type of things, or simply want to enjoy the video by understanding the madness behind it, here's a breakdown of the video: An artist struggles with his passion, trying to keep his scale of tools balanced. The blank canvas reflects his artistic dryness. A look inside his mind portrays his fight as a dancer who keeps falling, but at the same time relentless. We go deeper to see his metaphorical haircut as his identity is helplessly stripped away by a faceless man who plays the role of an oppressor (sometimes artistic freedom is repressed because people who don't understand it or don't like it will try to take it away from you) The artist breaks his focus and drops the tools, spilling color to his canvas, but not necessarily the ones he was looking for. Inner demons of the mind are released through this purging process. The red demon (a nod to Gaga's Applause) is his lust for FAME, the VANITY demon reflects his broken image, the black demon is his SPIRITUAL side, torn in half between two opposing vices. These three demons terrorize him as he vomits and fights for control, but through their creation, a ray of hope is conceived (the mystery box). He opens it and transforms into the magician, an eccentric spirit. However, his 15 seconds of fame doesn’t last long and shatters to illusion. Not true happiness yet. The man in the bathtub is Marat (from the Death of Marat painting by Jacques David), who is another personality of the artist. He writes his dying message and releases it into the dark. We now break into another world of fantasy. A yellow beach gypsy is about to take her life, but is liberated by the mysterious letter that Marat has sent. This is an idea of sacrifice; that Marat has given up his life to inspire and save others. We now travel back into the psychological dance of the artist. He gets up and dances harder and harder, finally achieving victory at the end. The blank canvas transforms into a doorway. He walks into the light and escapes to the outside realm (this world of “gypsy†people). This is when he truly believed in himself and the true colors appeared. He goes to find two stranded gypsies (metaphorically chained) and uses his success to free them. The message of freedom is passed on as everyone celebrates and moves towards harmony. …But it’s not over. Back in the dark, we see a reversal process happening. The dark rises, the demons merge together and become a “frankenstein†corpse left behind. They “undress†and pose the ultimate statement at the end: “ANYTHINGâ€. Did the artist truly achieve his nirvana? Was he liberated, or still confined in his mind? That’s up to each viewer’s experience to decide, or to simply dismiss. eifulien 2,969
YAAAAS! I'm SO GLAD AND HAPPY to see someone who has understood ARTPOP so well! You've found your ARTPOP! The video is spectacular! I loved the beach scene & the one where the artist frees the two gypsies. The end is also very interesting. My personal interpretation of it is that this demon is not done with the artist and it/he/she? will re-appear in the future just in another form (hence the ''ANYTHING'' part - it has the ability to change forms, shapes, appearance etc.) And here I'd use the ARTPOP concept to explain it since it is about possibilities, about finding one's freedom (in all its forms but especially the artistic freedom). In order to exist ARTPOP needs that demon because it's trying to limit the artist's freedom, to suppress his/her creativity. In the struggle to fight back the artist starts to create and through the art he/she finds his/herself i.e. find their own ARTPOP. It is the desire to win back your own freedom that drives him/her. So in order for the artist to continue to be creative, to innovate and explore new ideas, there must be something or someone (in our case the demon) that is trying to control him and take away his freedom. That's the only way to initiate a new creative rebellion and start searching for the new ARTPOP! I think something similar might have happened with Gaga and the album. She clearly had a brilliant and profound idea (albeit too complex for the normal people to care). So, while ARTPOP is about her freedom and healing, getting rid of all expectations, opinions and so on, it became also about the failure to fulfill this freedom. With all that she has said and some rumours surrounding the whole era I fear that this pure concept was trashed and the spirit of Gaga about it ended up biting the dust. I mean - she said that she included the ''commercial'' songs on this ARTPOP. Then we found out about the mess that was the choce of singles (Aura ---> Applause; Venus ----> DWUW) and many more examples I can't think of right now. I find it very ironic how exactly during this album and era which are about creativity and artistic freedom Gaga was somewhat limited with what she could do... Anyway, luckily these obstacles didn't prevent the music on the album from being awesome! And I'm full of hope Gaga will continue to fight for her own art (it doesn't really matter for me whether it will be a second act of ARTPOP or a whole new concept since she has always been ARTPOP. It just wasn't until this album that she realized it and named it) Oh, I'm the King of Offtopic @KenonAstro Keep up the good work! P.S sorry about the lengthy post!
