Larkin 100
I was on Youtube and saw this comment on GUY and thought that it was a good perspective on things. We have no need to worry about decay or whatever. Matt Converse- Little monsters, I was around when Madonna's "Erotica" came out and they called it a flop, and said she was "over". I loved the CD. And here she is, almost 25 years alter and still going strong. People saying anything negative should make you smile, it means she's obviously still very much in the game. A true flop and being "over" is when no one is saying anything. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to Gaga. They continue to talk, talk, talk, just furthering her icon status. When you are on top in such a big way as Lady Gaga has, they build you up, and then want to tear you down. Punches come from the left, the right, and below the belt. But Gaga is strong, she'll be back on top. I know what happened next with Madonna at this point in her career. Let's just say this, the public can be fickle, but they do love a comeback. Logan 20,740
I have no doubt that Gaga will continue to be big. While she loses some fans, she replaces them with others.
FRANK1991 3,329
good read! Cause once you let it go you better know it's gone
ClapDown 0
ARTPOP is fun and all, but its relative backlash is nothing compared to the Sex/Erotica era. Madonna was pushing the boundaries of s-xuality and gender and power at a deeply reactionary moment in American culture, which meant that it was bound to be evaluated better in the long run once the hysteria was over. ARTPOP, on the other hand...

Batwings 12,886
I've seen this comparison made before, and even though Madonna's Erotica era was much more controversial, the comparison is really a valid one.
Chiunzhan 997
ARTPOP was supposed to be her "Ray of Light" tbh
Bebe 17,101
Well yeah. Gaga at this point is building a legacy - short term single/album success isn't excessively important at this point. I feel comfortable knowing that 10-20 years from now people will look back on the ARTPOP era and see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=530Xz86Bntk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNu_-deVemE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKRNGofmfGo Such an amazing era I just wish that it was appreciated more currently... Then maybe we could have gotten more amazing videos and performances
nickkoko 922
When I read the title, I thought somebody was comparing the sound of Erotica to ARTPOP, and I know they sound nothing alike. But, now that I read that comment it all makes sense, lol. That's exactly right, though! Also, how can people still say she's over, flopping, etc. when she has a sold-out tour? The album may have not performed too well on the charts, but in this age of piracy it's hard to do that. Tours are where the real money is, because you can't go to a concert without paying for it (in other words, there's no way you can sneak into a stadium with all the security). I'm sure she'll have a public comeback in the next few years and it's going to be huge.
Leeo 2,366
Some months ago i saw one guy talking the same thing in one brazilian forum and one madonna fan was like "DON'T DO THIS, DON'T COMPARE THIS MASTERPIECE THAT'S EROTICA TO THIS **** WITHOUT SENSE THAT'S ARTPOP"... And I Was like...

XoXoJoanneGaga 629
Erotica was much more controversial, and dealt with the extremely touchy issue of the AIDS crisis at the time. But that's a good thing cause if Madonna came back from that, Gaga can presumably come back from this more easily.
