Foivos 64
Lady Gaga's s-xy, sensual show was as much a feast for the eyes as it was for the ears Forget the fact she's sold 27 million albums and has a net worth of almost $200 million. Never mind that, despite her career on a "downswing," she played to 87,000 fans in Quebec City Friday night. Big whoop. And yes, only Lady Gaga can make fire shoot out of her breasts but even that's not her most impressive feat. You know what I'm talking about. Canada Day, at the Montreal Jazz Fest, when she got on stage with Tony Bennett -- THE Tony Bennett -- and sang a duet of But Beautiful. He told her, loud enough for people to hear, that she is "the best entertainer in the world." The next day Bennett tweeted, "How wonderful @ladygaga was to share the stage with me last night at the Montreal Jazz Fest. The audience loved her!" Then she tweeted, "Thank you for the beautiful flowers itstonybennett You've changed my life." Really? She has Tony Bennett -- the 87-year-old king of cool, 59 years her senior -- swooning over her? Sending her flowers? Recording an album with her? Now she's got our attention. And when she took the stage Saturday night at Bluesfest, she had no trouble keeping it. It was hard, in fact, to take your eyes off her. Ottawa was the 21st stop on her latest concert tour, called artRAVE, the ARTPOP Ball named after her latest album released last November. She plays Buffalo on Monday and Toronto Wednesday. Saturday night, she emerged on the shoulders of two hunky men as the crowd roared with delight. She wore sparkling silver outfit in the shape of a one-piece bathing suit, with large orange feathers and straight blonde wig. Known for her salty tongue, she dropped two F-bombs before she even sang her second song, asking if we can effing hear her (we could) and telling us we'd get more effed up as the night went on (but what would my editor say?). She opened with the title song ARTPOP, and followed with a handful of other songs from the album. By the fifth song, Venus, her hair was bigger and browner and her one-piece was a bikini. As large flakes of confetti flew from stage, she eventually settled to the favourites that made her a superstar. The sensual stage show was as much a feast for the eyes as it was for the ears. Unlike some other young pop stars who use s-x and theatrics in their shows -- hello Britney, Miley -- Gaga is more versatile, her transitions from sassy to classy more authentic. Part of her success comes from how well she treats her fans, whom she affectionately calls Little Monsters. She thanked them several times last night. In Montreal last week she invited a young Ottawa girl on stage to sing with her. Last night she read a letter from a 20-something male fan who threw it onstage. It said he was an outsider, a freak, and she helped him accept himself. She singled him out in the front row, hugged him and invited him backstage after the show. She gave special memories to three girls, as well. She invited twp -- one dressed exactly like her -- up to dance with her during the last song of her set, Swine. Then she asked another young woman, whose sea shell top caught her eye, to sit at the piano with her while she sang the encore, Gypsy. She doesn't just preach her message of tolerance and inclusion, she practises it. Plus, she can sing. And her catchy tunes -- "Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro" -- are easy to sing along to. About 27,000 people -- from pre-teens to seniors who look like they should be at a Tony Bennett concert -- will have the hoarse voices Sunday morning to prove it. *** More than a few Bluesfest fans would tell you the can't miss act Saturday wasn't Lady Gaga, but Matt Andersen. Sweating in his long-sleeved blue plaid shirt and jeans, the burly, long-haired, bearded Maritimer looks like he just stepped off the Duck Dynasty set. But he is a true bluesman who never cheats his audience, especially when accompanied by the brass blowing Mellotones. To know him is to love him. *** A couple of top local acts kept the crowd entertained under the warm afternoon sun. Ottawa's Kalle Mattson provided a taste of his new album Someday the Moon Will Be Gold, and was followed by neo-soul band The Split.
