Emvee 8,396
just because a song has a synthesizer doesn't make it EDM. dance pop is not a sub genre of EDM. EDM is an umbrella term that includes beat-driven genres like house, trance, dubstep, d n' b, etc. Would you say that Tik Tok or California Gurls is EDM, too? electronic doesn't not mean it's EDM. you can't say Bad romance is EDM. EDM is Aviici, or Skrillex or Fatboy slim and those kinds of sounds. Just because it's made on the computer, doesn't mean it's EDM. That's wrong. Look up a definition of EDM on wikipedia, and then Dance pop or synth pop. No connection. Do the same with e.g. Just Dance or Bad romance or whatever. No connection to EDM a synth can emulate a guitar. Brass. Whatever. Doesn't make it EDM just because it uses a synth. DOn't make an ass out of yourself Stop trying to limit edm to ~underground~ Hard beats. It's not only that, even though that subculture wants to think so. If you actually knew something you'd know that edm actually does encompass anything that's electronic, which includes synth pop and dance pop. So, yeah, tik tok and California gurls actually do have elements of edm. They are dance pop. They were played at dance clubs. Can't stand pseudo music snobs. mister 17
Gaga should stick with what she's good at, even if it means being out of mainstream. :( But she's better at jazz
mcphee 1,790
Yes I think it's decline has started and thank god.. sorry... It's gotten so boring. I used to be a huge fan of it but now it's all so bleh. The only EDM artists who still hold my interest are Porter Robinson and Madeon (Well and Gaga if you count her as one) Off topic, but I had to write an essay on the poster in you're avi for my art exam. Schwerk 7,246
I know, so many people don't know what it is. And you seem to get your info from Wikipedia I know what I'm talking about, I've been going to dancefestivals all my life and have met and interviewed a lot of famous DJ's. What I said was: Gaga makes EDM music infused popmusic. To me a song like Brother by Avicci or Bad Romance both are EDM. And as I (and Aviccii and DJ Tiesto) said, EDM is a very new term, one that seemed to be made to be able to throw all the hundreds of variations of electronic dance music onto one big pile to avoid confusion with (US) lovers of dance music who don't want to listen to one style or substyle alone, but enjoy a variation of styles. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch
artRaver 3,188
I can't at this question right now... Is anyone aware of what EDM even is? There was a music festival called EDC in Vegas just this weekend and it sold out with 400,000 people months before it happened. It's solely all EDM music. If anything, it's becoming bigger than it ever has. The rave scene is getting only larger and larger each day. This. Tell 'em. I wish people would realize that electronic dance music isn't based solely on the stuff you hear on the radio like progressive house, dubstep and electro house. There's literally hundredth of sub-genre's but I won't get into that at least now. EDM isn't going anywhere soon and it has been around for a long time starting with the post disco era in the late 70's - early 80's and progressing from there. If anything EDM is becoming more popular otherwise festivals like EDC, Ultra, Tomorrowworld/Tomorrowland and Defqon.1 wouldn't exist. ✿ cherry blossom girl ✿

Pop 4,541
Dance POP is losing it's popularity after dominating 2008-2012. However... EDM in it's purest form is rising in popularity. Festivals like Ultra are huge right now and everyone seems to be into taking molly and raving which is hilarious to me considering I've been through that phase when it was underground. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF sure. Unless you grew up in the early 90s or were raving in the very early 2000's when raves went back underground after their surge of popularity in the late 90s you were not in that "phase" when it was underground. Dance pop is not whats losing popularity, dance pop is a vague genre that mutates and never genuinely dies. Its like balladry or hip hop. Theres always something within the genre breaking through regardless of whatever else is dominant because there will always be a widespread market for it. Whats lost popularity recently is that whole David Guetta/Afrojack nu-"rave" music and most definitely anything Ibiza influenced a la Pound the Alarm. What its popularity did though was open mainstream consumers up to the big wide world of electronic music. No longer are they viewing it one dimensionally as just "dubstep" or "house", electro has been integrated into every genre from rap to country; from Lorde and Disclosures electro-minimalism to A$AP Rocky and Kanye's mainstream forays into "trap" music to the rise in popularity of alternative artists like M83 and Phoenix that have always integrated synthpop elements into their music. 7 or even 5 years ago none of that would've been popular, mainstream consumers have opened up to it. Theres really no genre as a whole thats lost popularity in recent years with "edm"'s rise to dominance. the only thing thats lost popularity are specific subgenres that come and go like dubstep and ibiza pop. aaronyoji 2,054
well the music she made in 2008 wasn't really EDM though. someone had to say it. quite frankly the black eyed peas where making more edm based songs than gaga when she came out, lets b real. also, i will always love underground electronic music, but all that more dancey "EDM" labeled stuff that u hear more in the mainstream, it just cant evolve any further. i cant really see whats left to make with edm, that box is full now.
