Whispering 18,865
Considering many people in my family and community are going to die early from heart disease and/or diabetes, it's not something I feel comfortable just ignoring it. I don't preach it but I can't bring myself to listen to excuses that don't apply and complaints that merely take knowledge (which is lacking unfortunately) and willpower (which is hard I'll admit) to overcome. What if those people in your family have an illness or disorder that causes weight gain or has to take medicine that causes weight gain. All the knowledge and willpower in the world won't keep them from gaining weight. Among the medications that cause weight gain: Medications used to treat diabetes (such as sulfonylureas) Antipsychotic or schizophrenia medications, including chlorpromazine (such as Thorazine), thioridazine (Mellaril), and olanzapine (Zyprexa) Beta-blockers (prescribed for high blood pressure, and some heart conditions) Antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Norpramin), trazodone (Desyrel), Prozac, etc. Hormone replacement therapy Birth control pills Corticosteroids taken for conditions like asthma and lupus Antiepileptics taken to control seizures, especially valproic acid (Depakene or Depakote) and carbamazepine (such as Tegretol) *And this is just a partial list of the many d--gs with the side effect
uo111 5,282
If someone asks for your advice, then you can give it. I find that a lot of people who share your perspective really don't fully grasp the emotional and psychological nature of the issue and the self-perpetuating cycle that comments like yours can provoke. The mental issues are what makes it hard to lose weight, but the problem is that using them as an excuse is really bad. That's essentially saying I can't lose weight because my brain won't let me. And that's completely the opposite of what needs to happen. It's extremely hard but if you have mental problems with your weight, you have to change the way you think and if you can't do it on your own then you need to seek help because it just can't work any other way. It can consume your life but it's never too late to take action. That's the issue with a lot of things, not just weight. This is getting a little too off topic I think. What if those people in your family have an illness or disorder that causes weight gain or has to take medicine that causes weight gain. All the knowledge and willpower in the world won't keep them from gaining weight. I've read studies on those pills. (some of them I should say, not all of them). The weight gain is usually minimal, 10 pounds or less. It's a rare case for it to be severe. And 10 pounds isn't going to push a normal healthy person into obesity. Maybe risk, but if they are eating healthy the slight extra weight gain won't actually make a difference. I don't obsess over weight, I could care less if they are 150 pounds or 160 pounds. Health is the issue for me. As for illness or disorders, they are more likely to lose weight from that. It's so unlikely that I don't even have to consider it. But if it did happen, why exactly would I blame them for that? Who cares, those people are not the normal unhealthy fat person, they are the exception. Melech 9,900
The solution is simple, stop trying to come over illegally The US has enough of our own problems to deal with Then USA should change their declaration of independence

All I'm saying is that almost no one truly thinks they can't lose weight. Almost everyone knows that it's a psychological block or a lack of will power. But saying that it's as easy as just eating better and exercising more trivializes how hard those psychological blocks can be to overcome. That's my whole issue with it. Yes, losing weight is technically rather straightforward and simple, but presenting it as such is not conducive whatsoever in helping people who are actually struggling with losing weight. It comes down to this: no one can successfully force someone else to lose weight. Calling someone fat won't help. Saying they just need to eat better won't help. Saying they need to work out won't help. People have to come to that point on their own. More often than not, when people try to get someone to lose weight, it makes the who situation worse. Weight is something that is strongly linked to a state of mind, and I think it's problematic when people disregard that. On another note, I once took a medicine that made me gain 30 pounds in a month and a half. It was ****ing brutal and mentally devastating and it was really hard to come back from. On even another note, I'm technically classified as obese Which is why I think BMIs are a joke. BUT the point is, these issues are so much more nuanced than "lol just eat better" or "lol just stop crossing the boarder". There's a demand (and a need) for immigrants in America. Yet we only blame immigrants for FILLING the demand. The easiest and most effective way to eliminate illegal immigration would be to completely ban them from being hired and to increase enforcement of said bans. But no one wants to go after corporations or employers, they just want to condemn the immigrants.

But no one wants to go after corporations or employers, they just want to condemn the immigrants. Weight stuff: I mostly agree but, we do need to educate people on what the food that they eat is actually doing. A lot of people actually just don't know that scrambled eggs(cooked with oil, which is completely unnecessary) with buttered toast, bacon, hash browns (again cooked with oil) and a glass of orange juice (from concentrate of course) is not a well balanced breakfast. The mental issues are huge for some people, but not for everyone. A lot of people (most I would say) are uneducated as to the food they eat, some of them are willfully ignorant (Those people piss me off) That medicine stuff is really awful btw. I would go so far as to say they are mostly more harmful than they are helpful in the case of dealing with weight issues where even gaining 2 pounds is too much for someone. But there comes a time when a mental problem with weight isn't about weight. I have friends who struggle with that. I've seen what they go through. I am certainly not talking about them when I say losing weight is easy. To them it's much more than just about being a healthy weight, in fact they are a healthy weight. Bolded part: YES! No one cares to go after the corporations because they are led to believe that immigrants are evil and wanting to destroy America by taking our jobs. It's absolutely ridiculous. The corporations that control the immigrants are scary as **** in their amount of power, and how they can so easily control they way people think. I think it's freaky personally. Bat 6,162
The humane thing? At least provide them with a cot or type of mattress. Find alternative emergency locations to hold children so that they aren't overcrowded like this (which it sounds like they did). Like it says in the article, the officials should have seen this coming and this situation of overcrowding should not have occurred. America should strive for much better than this. This isn't how people should be treated. This is inhumane. Omg give me a break already. Think this is inhumane? Go watch photo's of Syria or Iran or North-Korea then u know what inhumane is. I have no pity whatsoever for them, they know extremely well what they are doing is illegal. Stay in ur own country.

Really? And honestly, it says a lot about you if you honestly have no pity for them. Apathy and detestation isn't a good look.

I've known many people personally that have gained weight because of disorders, illnesses or medicines...and No, the weight gain was not minimal. A person can easily gain 20 to 40 pounds over the period of a year or two (or longer) from medicines that they have to take to function or even to survive. No...metabolic and hormone disorders cause weight gain. You are really trying hard to minimize struggles that many have, those who don't have a choice concerning their health issues and medications that have to be taken for a better life. Which do you pick...bipolar depression with suicidal ideation or a significant weight gain over a period of a few years? Do you take a medicine to help you function in life with Tourette's or do you just drop out of school and stay at home? Do you take the medicines that will help complete your two year fight with leukemia or do you worry about the massive weight gain? Would you take pills to control your seizures or give up all the things in life that your disorder was keeping you from? Would you take meds that helped you get out of bed in the morning and move your hands enough to make a cup of coffee or would you just suffer unbearably with rheumatoid arthritis? Contrary to your narrow view, there really are actually people behind these examples, and they all chose to live a better life now, and took the trade off of weight gain. DrewStevens 5,249
Um okay, illegal immigration is a felony, so yes it's a serious crime. Legal, is the same category as murder, rape, and most domestic violence. So yes, it is quite LITERALLY a serious crime. Homework Secondly, the vast majority of Americans are working class, most of them blue-collar jobs. They do, however, pay in a way illegals don't; taxes! So let me get this straight; these people (1) don't pay any taxes to the government, (2) are looking to take the jobs of tax-paying americans that will contribute to our society here, (3) and are attempting a serious crime, BUT they want the government to use my/our tax-payer's money incase they get caught and the children they subjected to extremely dangerous travel have to sleep in a holding cell????!!!!!! Instead of putting those dollars towards MY children's education after I PAID my lifetime's hard earned money?! And while we're already paying BILLIONS for a countless number of them to live here?! AND while we try to solve the problems connected to environmental destruction and economic instability created and fostered by the population spike due to illegal immigration?! My point is simple and it is the only point I need to make: We. Owe. Them. Nothing. 1. When you buy something, you pay taxes. They buy food, clothes and other stuff, so basically they are paying taxes. 2. They took the jobs that some americans don't want to take. They can't get good jobs. 3. It's not really a serious crime, it's a misdemeanor (lesser crime). The person is detained and held until they have a deportation hearing. The government uses your taxes to maintain rapists and murderers too. Illegals barely use your taxes, they don't get the same things that we all get. Actually homeless people use more of your taxes than illegals. Illegal immigration is obviously a problem but America has worse problems than that. US citizens affect the country way more than illegals do.

MJHolland 12,725
oh my god, that turned into the messiest thread ever... The only thing I was trying to get across was - if you don't like the results of something, stop doing anything and everything that causes those result. If you don't like the conditions you'll be put through in a country, don't go. If you don't like your weight, don't eat junk food ever (yes, it is that simple. Regardless of these conditions many members claim are the cause of obesity, which rarely effect those with actual weight problems, you cannot get fat eating salads, vegetables, fruit, and having a general balanced diet. It's easy to avoid weight issue and the health issues along with it for most people - if they want to!).
DrewStevens 5,249
as we should, it's our country to do what we want with it... no... We should do our best for our nation. It's sad to see that these "criminals" respect the nation values way more than most of the citizens.
