And FICA takes out a certain percentages from paychecks belonging to workers regardless of a legit SSN, which the government keeps anyway while the worker in question will never get to use that as a pension past the age of 65. And schools are paid for every student enrolled, regardless of immigration status. Immigrants can and do pay taxes, as can be done via an ITIN number instead of a SSN for IRS purposes. There is money flowing in and out of the cycle, but the imbalance is definitely worthy of attention. Illegal family do use more taxes than they put it. Suppose an undocumented couple have three kids so their schooling alone cost taxpayers around $30K per year. If the couple is lucky enough to find a $10/hour job each, that's $800/per week, $41,600/year. With the three kid exemptions and Child Tax Credit they would pay only 10% taxes, so they pay only $4,160 income taxes per year. If they spend $10K in goods at 8% sales tax, that's an additional $800 in taxes they pay. So for the year, the family pay $4,960 in taxes into the system, but their kids schooling alone cost U.S. taxpayers over $30,000! Lion Heart 15,041 Posted June 14, 2014 Author Share Posted June 14, 2014 Another update WASHINGTON  The Obama administration plans to move as many as 1,000 unaccompanied minor migrants from Border Patrol facilities in Texas to facilities in Baltimore, Md., and Richmond, Va., in an effort to ease overcrowding and address the growing humanitarian crisis along the border. Tens of thousands of Central American children, many under the age of 10, have begun flooding across the border and into cramped, overcrowded holding facilities. The White House has directed FEMA to begin working with the Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services to relocate the children. DHS has already begun moving children to facilities in Texas and California, and starting Saturday will move them to Ft. Sill in Oklahoma. According to a “transportation flow chart†obtained by BuzzFeed, the administration will now begin resettling the children to an Office of Refugee Resettlement facility in Baltimore and to St. Paul’s College in Richmond. Both facilities can accommodate up to 500 beds, according to the document. According to the chart, DHS buses and planes, as well as commercial planes, will be used to transport the children to all facilities. The decision to move the children to other facilities has angered conservatives, including Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne, who has threatened to sue the government to temporarily block sending them to a Nogales, Ariz., facility. HHS spokesman Ken Wolfe declined to comment on the plan to move the children to Baltimore and Richmond, saying in an email, “Fort Sill’s temporary shelter will begin to receive children in the Unaccompanied Alien Children program tomorrow. Lion Heart 15,041 Posted June 15, 2014 Author Share Posted June 15, 2014 Catholic Charities to help with immigrant crisis Hundreds of unaccompanied Latino children, some as young as three years old, who have crossed the U.S. border illegally, are having their immediate needs fulfilled at a new Catholic Charities center that opened June 11 near a bus station in McAllen, Texas. Because of horrific conditions in Latin America coupled with President Obama’s decision to stop deportations of young illegal immigrants, 47,017 unaccompanied children were apprehended on the border from October through May, an increase of 92 percent from just one year ago, the National Catholic Register reports.The new Catholic Charities facility is providing clothing, food, and personal items to the young illegal immigrants as they wait for federal agents to open their case files. A group of Catholic women have volunteered to bring in supplies and meet the children’s immediate needs. Volunteers must go through background checks and receive immunizations in order to provide care for the young Latinos. “I’m so proud of my people,†said Ofelia de los Santos, who usually works as a prison-ministry volunteer in the Brownsville, Texas diocese. “I’m so proud to be Catholic.†Federal immigration agents are trying to find social workers or relatives in Mexico willing to receive the children. Many, however, are sheltered privately in the United States. In the Brownsville diocese, 13 shelters are currently housing the young illegal immigrants. The two largest centers shelter up to 300 at one time. Similar facilities are developing in other states on the border. Erica Dahl-Bredine, the El Salvador representative for Catholic Relief Services, said she has many children who have “fallen off the train,†referring to “El Tren de la Muerte,†or Death Train, a network of Mexican freight trains that has become the primary form of transportation for Central American and Mexican children fleeing treacherous conditions in their countries. Teens and younger children attempt to run and jump onto moving freight cars. Since many can’t pull themselves aboard, they fall and end up swinging instead onto the train tracks. As a result, some of the children are left with permanent, debilitating injuries. “I see children who’ve lost limbs to the train and return home,†Dahl-Bredine said. “The couplings between the cars are notoriously dangerous. I see children who have lost an arm and a leg or both legs.â€Those illegal young immigrants who are able to make it onto the train have to then contend with notorious gangs and criminals who are being paid to protect them. The gangs recruit children as young as 10 years old, who find a sense of security and identity in the gang culture. “I talk to girls who have been gang-raped by the smugglers,†said Dahl-Bredine. “I work with families who are looking for missing loved ones,†she adds about the children who never reach the U.S. border and are never heard from again. Kristyn Peck, associate director of children’s services for the U.S. Bishops’ Children and Migration Office, said that, due to the gangs, there is no practical way for Americans to ensure safe passage for children traveling to the border. She believes Catholics should respond to this crisis. “If you look at Scripture, Christ is a migrant. As a global Church, these are all of our children, and they come from countries that are mostly Catholic, Peck said. “As Catholics, we are well-equipped to respond.†The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a $350 million “funding opportunity†for residential care providers of the thousands of illegal minors crossing the U.S. border. Grantees will be expected to provide the young people with case management services, educational services, family reunification and release services, group and individual counseling, individualized needs assessments and service plans, information about free legal assistance available to them, medical and mental health services, family planning services, religious access, right to privacy, transportation, and visitation and phone calls. She said d--g gangs have gained control and are recruiting children as young as 10 years old. The children confuse the gangs with a source of identity and security in a world of hopelessness. “Parents and grandparents are terrified of what will happen to their children if they stay [in their home countries],†Dahl-Bredine said. They long for the safety and abundance relatives in the United States can provide for their children, if only they can get there. Smugglers are typically paid to help young children, while tens of thousands of teens are taking initiatives to reach the United States on their own. “The adults who are sending children know about the horrific dangers involved in this,†Dahl-Bredine said. “When I ask grandmas why they would let children make the trip, they say the gangs won’t leave them alone. The illegal immigrants can not be turned away from public schools, since all public schools are required to educate all kids, regardless of immigration status. To enroll in school, the undocumented parents just have to show a rent or utility bill, so the illegal students are eating up the taxpayers' money. The entire U.S. administration is engaged in addressing the situation, in making sure these children are housed and fed and receive medical treatment, but at the same time we also realize the crucial importance of stemming the tide of migration.†According to surveys and press reports, some of the surge is due to rumors that kids who make it into the U.S. by the end of this year will be eligible to stay in the U.S. indefinitely or permanently.Administration officials have said they believe the surge is due primarily to economic hardship and an increase in d--g-related violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They have also underscored that children arriving now are not eligible for a deferred deportation program President Barack Obama has set up and would not be eligible for residency under immigration reform measures pending in the Congress. While in Guatemala, officials said, Biden will speak out publicly to discourage parents from sending children north to the U.S. “The vice president will be making this trip to Guatemala to discuss both the violence and economic opportunity side and the misperceptions of U.S. immigration policy,†said the senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “While he’s there in Guatemala he will emphasize that illegal immigration is not safe. That putting your child in the hands of a criminal smuggling organization is not safe. And he will make clear that recently arriving children are not eligible for [the deferred deportation program] or earned citizenship provisions in current immigration reform legislation.†“The bottom line is that it’s not worth subjecting children to a perilous journey when, at the end of the day, there is no light at the end of the tunnel,†the official added. Some Republican lawmakers assert that Obama’s rhetoric and actions on illegal immigration, including his decision to defer deportation of some migrants who arrived as children in 2007 or earlier, has fueled the surge across the border. Last week, Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain, both Arizona Republicans, sent the president a letter urging him to speak out publicly in order to stem the flow of children making the trip north. Administration officials did not acknowledge a direct connection between the letter and Biden’s decision to stage the summit-type meeting, but said they’re well aware of the criticism. “We’ve had extensive consultations with Congress over the last several days and consider dealing with this challenge a partnership,†the senior official said. Biden will also be visiting the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Brazil, where he’ll attend the World Cup. Last Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told Congress his agency is struggling to keep with the onslaught of young people crossing into the United States from Mexico. Any who, we already know that the only way the immigration crisis can be fixed is if the government starts up the Dream Act again and truly help those who have put in their papers into the system. We need to help not only the people who want to come into the country, but those who are already in it and want nothing else but to become lawfully abiding citizens. Mark Ruffalo (of Hulk fame) made a similar point on the Bill Maher show, about how the cost always comes up as a barrier to things like expansion/reform of health care/Immigration/etc., but when it comes to war, it's an afterthought.
