Why was the BTW era dubbed a flop but not the Prism era?

Born This Way was considered a flop by many but the Prism era is experiencing the same success yet no one calls that album a flop.

With Born This Way at 7 million in album sales, I don't think Katy is gonna touch BTW. Born This Way sold about 10 million singles with its first four in the USA. I believe Prism is at like 12m, barely ahead.

So what's the double standard?

Good point actually...

I can imagine its because some people are still pressed over the $.99 Amazon deal

Maybe because the album was centered around topics that could be sensitive to some??

I don't know honestly..

By who was the BTW era dubbed a flop, though? By who should the Prism era be called a flop? Which people are you talking about?

Because Gaga's first era was very succesful album and single-wise and each era, the success has decreased continuously. On the other hand Katy has experienced the opposite. She becomes more successful with each era, even though no Katy era is as successful as Gaga's The Fame era.

this, I've never heard that the album and era was a flop, I only heard that Judas and Marry The Night were flop singles tbh.

Katy's image is more indicative of an "American Sweetheart" whereas Gaga's image is more artsy, experimental, and provocative, which makes some people uncomfortable. Therefore, she's a bigger target for criticism.

BTW Should have been like her 5th album - too much of a jump in tone!

not her 2nd.

People need to stop telling Born This Way is a flop, because it's far from that. It sold 6 million copies, 20 million in single sales, a $184 million tour and by far her most complete work.

People say Prism is more successful because it's the most successful era from a female artist since a year.

Who knows, really. Miley Cyrus' most successful era is comparable with Gaga's weakest, yet everyone sees it as a huge success.

It's important to say that Gaga's initial success was a true phenomenon.

Edit: Now we can say ''who says BTW was a flop??'' but back in the day, haters, media and some of her own fans said that BTW had underperformed sales wise.
