Why does Mary Jane Holland fall flat?

I think it's because the production is SO NOISEY. Don't me wrong, I love the tracks lots, but I totally see what you mean. I almost stop paying attention sometimes when it plays. It's kind of a blur. Sometimes empty space in songs does wonders and leaves the listener on edge (like in Venus when it goes silent on the verses between lines and she says "VENUS" or even in last year's mega-hit Royals, where empty space dominated the background of the track), and MJH has none of that at all really. It's just a HUGE song production wise and if you're not really paying attention to detail underneath, it all starts to sound like a buzz in the background of the album.

I didn't know MJH was so loved. Technically it's a good song with good production, but I never listen to it anymore. It doesn't grab me or stand out as an ARTPOP highlight. It's kind of similar to Government Hooker in that way, though I think I like GH more.

What the actual **** MJH is her best song the prechorus and verses are her BEST, the bridge only loses to GUY's and the chorus is still a highlight. It's a godsend and haters will deal.

It's alright, but I must say that the bridge is incredible. Cringe-worthy, but still kind of amazing.

It's the definition of just "okay" IMO. There's nothing that sets it apart and it's not even close to being seriously mentioned among Gaga's best. But the same is true of Dance in the Dark and everyone stans for that. I've simply come to the conclusion that my taste just doesn't match up with the majority of the fanbase.

If I had to rank the songs on ARTPOP, MJH would rank somewhere in the middle. I don't think of it as a highlight of the album but I wouldn't call it filler at all.
