"Overproduced"

And yet, I've seen people argue that ARTPOP should only be listened to loud. I think BTW was much better loud. It fills your body.

ARTPOP does sound better with the volume turned up. Venus, GUY, Aura, and MJH sound amazing when the volume is turned up, but it doesn't have that natural loudness that BTW had.

Not at all. They were just produced to be loud, which is fine, but I think in comparison I don't like it as much.

Making loud music vs making music loud is the difference.

It's one of the stupidest words I've ever heard. People started bandwagoning and using it as the reason Born This Way didn't do as well as they'd hoped. Now, since ARTPOP isn't doing as well as they'd hoped, they want Born This Way's sound back. Shocking.

When I use it, I mean that ARTPOP is over-produced as in over-worked (compare MANiCURE and Swine at SF vs the album, not including vocals or obvious live differences) and sometimes her vocals are a little too... metallic and unnaturally crisp- as is the music. There is such a thing as being too clear and polished. If you listen to the clarity and vocals on her previous albums in comparison then you can probably hear it. I like the music itself, but mixing and production are not DJWS's strongest points imo. RedOne was probably her consistently the best producer. I wish she would have him at least co-produce and help with the other productions, even if he didn't create them himself. He just polishes up so well in all genres that he has done.

I'm not saying all of ARTPOP is over-produced, but I do think about half of it is. It's so inorganic vocally, even on some notes in Dope. I don't think everyone can hear it, but it leaves the sound empty.

But so many people get overly-defensive on here and act like it's a cheap cop out of an opinion. smh. It's not misunderstanding music, it's understanding that highly produced and mastered music isn't always the better option for some songs and looking past a childish Gaga bias to realize that. It wouldn't be such a widely-cited criticism if there wasn't any ground to it.

I think that's the reason she always sounds better live.

It's when a song is too advanced for one to understand.

Actually when a song is too full and has too much going on, so that the song's flow is ruined. pretty much a lot of BTW songs suffer a bit from this (its borderline overproduced due the soundselection)

Too many layers of different sounds in the song that end up overshadowing the song. You know the saying "less is more" it's along those lines.

I think that's the reason I liked some of the TFM andBTW vocals most, is that they more seamless and raw, less mechanical. Even TF in some songs was less polished up than ARTPOP imo. Speechless vs Dope- vocally Speechless sounds more emotional, despite Dope's intense vocals.

I do agree though, live gives extra layers that I think were kind of cut off from production. Even on the ARTPOP songs I didn't care for- they were still better in the videos I've seen from the tour.

Am I one of the only ones that honestly didn't think BTW is as overproduced as everyone says?

Hair and Americano are equally as "overproduced" as Donatella in my opinion

It means that the song sounds as if it suffers from too much editing and production work. Usually it's a common complaint if there's a lot of different sounds in a song or if a song is too 'loud,' in the sense that there's a lot going on in the song.

It's a legitimate complaint but sometimes people don't understand what the term means.

People on here seem to think it's a term that's interchangeable with 'loud', and it really isn't that simple. I think it annoys me almost as much when people say thing are 'overrated' and 'underrated' :toofunny:

If you walked up to any producer, mixer, or recording engineer and told them something was "overproduced" the first thing they'd say is "how?"  It has no meaning or context except to an individual person, that's why it's a meaningless term.   I guarantee that term is used way more by pop stans then by anybody in the industry.
