Guest
Very interesting! I wasn't around at the time, but it does seem very similar. :) TEOG was a marginal success and even then for the places where it was what you could consider "successful" the success of a song isn't only on paper. People didn't really care about TEOG. It wasn't something everyone was talking about and requesting. It wasn't a year end list favorite or much of a pop highlight or whatever the list goes on and on. It just existed for a second and went away and no one said anything about it lol It smashed here in the States though
blacklistedd 599
Very interesting! I wasn't around at the time, but it does seem very similar. :) It smashed here in the States though I live in Los Angeles. The Edge of Glory was not a smash success. It was a whatever success that came and went. Monsters always talk up the Born This Way singles.
Scotty 87
I get your point but it worries me that we're comparing ARTPOP to Erotica (an album that was released 10 years into Madonna's career and Gaga is only 6 years into hers).
Anderson123 38,605
I can see why you'd compare these two albums, but the minds of the people today are completely different to the ones in the 80's. Madonna was all about s-x during that time and that could've killed her career, and on top of that, she released EROTICA. It was like, she wanted to end her career on purpose and people back then were way more conservative than today. As for Gaga and ARTPOP, I feel like you can't compare the themes. Yes, the album has some songs inspired by s-x, but in no way was ARTPOP as controversial and shocking as Erotica, it's just Gaga talking about Art and Pop, and people were just not interested in that (other than the fans), so yeah, Gaga just released an album that not a lot of people care about because it was not appealing to them or there were other songs out there being more popular at the time (Blurred Lines, Royals, Happy, Roar). Just like Born This Way, people were focused on Adele and didn't really look elsewhere at the time, even though Born This Way opened with a million copies being sold, but that was because it was Gaga's next movement after the huge Fame Monster and Bad Romance/Poker Face moments. So it was like "What is she going to do next?" I think it's interesting to compare the two, even though Madonna has always been controversial and even released bigger albums later in her career. I hope Gaga does the same thing. I get the point of this thread, so it's nice to see people talk about this.

2NE1LG 193
If things align, Gaga's R&B record is coming next. i am craving an R&B record from her. I think it would slay
Tycho 3,694
There's still a lot of room for Gaga to dominate in later years. It's almost impossible for someone to produce a flawless discography in terms of marketing - the public, charts and sales are completely unpredictable. There will be times that an album doesn't quite hit the mark whether that be the fault of the music or just the way it was presented, so many things can be assigned to the negative attributes and downfall of an artist or album. That isn't particularly a bad thing though, it gives people the opportunity to fall in love with her again to make a stronger comeback. We're just very used to success with Gaga she's been big from the beginning. This is the first time we've really seen any weakness in terms of success so that's why it's caused such a reaction. Carrying that success for 4 years is insanely good when you consider how disposable and quick people are in the music industry. I'm not giving up yet and neither should any of you. She's still got it, just wait for it.

MonsterRocket 55
Then agreed. Sorry to get sassy. TEOG was a marginal success and even then for the places where it was what you could consider "successful" the success of a song isn't only on paper. People didn't really care about TEOG. It wasn't something everyone was talking about and requesting. It wasn't a year end list favorite or much of a pop highlight or whatever the list goes on and on. It just existed for a second and went away and no one said anything about it lol But her songs can't be loved and constatly talked by everyone all the time Neither Michael Jackson nor Madonna achieved that... it's impossible. So, if one of their songs isn't as remembered as other hits, does that mean no one cares?lol TEOG was a sucess...the last hit on BTW but it actually was, like it or not There's still a lot of room for Gaga to dominate in later years. She's still got it, just wait for it. Yes it was childs play compared to the Sex book. When the book came out it overshadowed the Erotica album itself. When Gaga did the puke act it was only talked about for a small amount of time and the album went on running its course. Regardless there is no comparison between ARTPOP and Erotica other than they both underperformed on the charts compared to their previous albums. That's what we were comparing
