These are also the people that stated that homos-xuality was a mental disease as well as the fact that children who disrupt classrooms should be medicated for defiance/conduct disorder (DSM-V)

Ironically, the APA has stated that it is effective in the short run to promote immediate response and compliance

Most parents, including mine, followed that up with scolding me as well as punishing me by taking away my belongings, not allowing me to watch tv, etc.

It's funny how the USA has the most amount of shows about misconduct in children yet their "psychologically accredited" methods of taking care of a situation have yet to really "blossom"

See: The Educational system as well as their methods of "punishment" that has really little bearing on anything and is deemed ineffective

I just happened to use the American Psychological Associations' stance in my response to that user, I could have easily used the Canadian Psychological Association's nearly identical press release on the issue. Every major national and international psychological institution condemns corporal punishment. This is far from an "American" issue.

I'm going to have to bow out of this conversation though, because I am literally disgusted by anyone who would defend the actions of this woman. This was not a slap on the hand to prevent immediate harm, it was an act of violence committed by an angry, scared, and ignorant woman in order to combat her daughters irresponsible use of social media.

Bottom line, the evidence shows that corporal punishment is not an effective long term solution to behavior problems.

And I can't help but not be surprised that the only people defending corporal punishment in this thread were themselves victims of this lazy form of parenting, they are just continuing the cycle of violence their parents started when they beat them.

You're showing ignorance right now to how the Caribbean culture disciplines their children.

Now what would you do if you had a 10 year old child that laid their hands on you?! Would you sit there and take it while verbally disciplining them, or nah?  :usrs:

Essence

This... what the mom did here was quite extreme, but I don't get why some are trying to make it seem like physical discipline will lead a child to a life of crime and psych issues. If anything, if it's done right, they should learn right from wrong. I guess it's just how you grew up and who raised you. My parents did use a belt with me, but they also showed me love throughout my life, so I know they cared. They weren't just beating me for fun cause they got some satisfaction out of it...

I think the issue was the nature of the video. The mother is punishing this girl in a very interrogatory/torture chamber like fashion. She has the child's siblings assist throughout and RECORDS the whole thing, only to post the video online. What does this say about her motives? is she punishing or belittling her child?

She shows no remorse, just pure anger and I'm sure some people must have inferred satisfaction. Also you're right, the mom went to very extreme lengths. She lashed her child on the face multiple times for six minutes and even when she was on the ground covering her eyes the mother continued. That is abuse.

And yet you show no signs of even acknowledging the thought from another individual's perspective and continue to downplay an entire culture. :wtf:

I don't understand why everyone is defending the mom. Discipline and "keeping a kid in check" start at an early age.

When you have to discipline them like this you are way too late and you done something wrong as a parent.

Listen, if you can provide me with a legitimate reason why I should support corporal punishment then do it. But I'm not going to pretend to respect a culture that doesn't respect me.

Because paired with chastising it's been more effective globally than a "scolding"
