Ever since I heard Joanne in full it became obvious to me why they chose Perfect Illusion instead. PI was the closest to the classic Gaga sound on Joanne. 

Million Reasons and AYo sound like nothing Gaga has ever worked before. They were almost as hard to predict as PI.

I knew it'd flop from first listen  it was too loud and her vocals were too screechy and unfiltered...which is why I LOVE the song but yeah definitely not the type of song that becomes a hit.

I think as others mentioned they genuinely thought that it being the lead for Gaga's "comeback" was going to be enough. They also had a small radio deal apparently for the first week and probably thought it could build up after that but it just didn't. I have no clue how they thought it would of worked. Based on the interviews they did she really seemed to have thought it was going to do much better than it did.

Thank God MR did what it did! The era REALLY relied on that song. It still worried me though how radio was STFILL negligent when it comes to MR. Like it only had an overall radio audience of 72M and peaked at like #19 or something (?) even though it had all the indications of being a monster smash hit if properly supported by radio...It always had boosts on itunes whenever promoted and it was even performed on Superbowl and EVEN then that didnt manage to make it a proper radio hit. It worries me a bit about her relationship with radio in general for future singles. The Cure did even worse on radio (understandably due to a lack of promo or video) but still. I really wonder how her next single will do now. It will be interessting to track.

It did rather weak which always surprises me because ppl make it out to be have done well on radio but when u check out it's stats on over all radio it was pretty bad I guess us monsters just say it did good for not having a MV or performance but even then...songs in that vain should have at least reached an over all audience of 50M before a plausible MV release...the song peaked at 35.5M overall radio audience and quickly fell after that and only peaked at #52 on pop

I just think pop radio in the US are very ageist tbh and won't play songs by older artists as easy like they did when those pop stars were younger.

Beyoncé barely get's radio plays anymore, Pinks what about us underpeformed alot in the US compared to pretty much the rest of the world, keshas praying only Peaked at pop #9 despite being a big lead and comeback for her and her 2nd single is struggeling. CCTR went #8 and the rest of witness singles Floped. Cheap thrills took months for US radio to jump on despite smashing ww. Jts new stuff are doing bad, Britney haven't had a radio hit since 2011 etc. So it's just not gaga having a problem having a radio hit nowdays, almost all the artists that blew up around her time and her age is having it harder.  All these artists had #1 pop hit after hit but those times are over and HAC radio should be the focus now and streaming. 

Pop radio right now are all domminated by people in their early 20s like Camilla, bebe, dua, jb, selena, demi, Shawn, Charlie Puth and others. It will be hard for someone like Gaga to go #1 on pop again.
