A lot of people will either move on from that artist or a new generation will come and listen to something else. For example, I'm surprised to see that a lot of people are not familiar with Pink's music even though her last album was released 5 years ago, can't even imagine Christina Aguilera, a lot of kids today have no idea who she is now because it's been a while since they were in the spotlight. I think this is why Rihanna is such a popular artist, she's always releasing music and they KNOW what is popular at that time. Madonna's last BIG BIG time was around Hung Up - 4 Minutes so that's like a 10 year gap long enough for kids to grow up and don't know who she is.
