If they really cared much about this topic, they would learn how many artifacts, art pieces, and so on has been stolen and now owned by rich people, traded by rich people and even the black market. Wasn’t even the best record in that vein to come out *that year* (which would be Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure, which is a far more emotionally dynamic and compositionally interesting record with far better vocals). Dua’s voice is *fine*, but imo Charli has more expressive range as a vocalist, whereas Dua’s delivery is generally emotionally flat and vacant. Have never once felt anything listening to a Dula Peep track.

While many thought this was a fun Mediterranean motif, the earrings were later revealed to be genuine historical artefacts dating back 3,000 years to Iran. Fans were first clued in when Harper’s Bazaar listed the earrings as a pair “from Barron London, constructed from 1st-millennium BC ancient discs.” The Barron London website in turn says the jewellery is from Glenn Spiro’s collection. Spiro owns a very private and exclusive jewellery house for the uber wealthy. The gold pieces are described as “a pair of Ziwiye gold medallion plaques, circa 1st millennium BC, Iran. Mounted by Glenn Spiro with diamonds in yellow gold” on the website. The discs, which were turned into earrings by Spiro, are believed to be a part of the Ziwiye hoard, alongside a number of other artefacts that were found uncovered in a plot of land outside of Ziwiyeh Castle, near the city of Saqqez in Kurdistan province, Iran, in 1947. An Instagram creator by the handle @dr_archaeology pointed out the murkiness around the way the artefact was sourced. I was never a big fan of rock music, but in the last years, I really start to like listen some rock music. Especially, The Queen & Metallica. I think a rock album would be really great to have from her.

Ironically, this is lowkey historically accurate. Both Persia and Greece were invading and looting each other for centuries. It’s a bit tasteless but also quite fascinating showing how our relationship with these things change or remain over time. It’s naive to try put every artefact in its exact origin when part of the items biography is how it’s rediscovered and travels. I’d like it to go back to Iran with the owners’ good will and consent. But realistically, Iran’s clerics are generally against surfacing these artefacts, they literally feature a God on them. The regime carefully weaponizes and censors its history. It would be nice if these could be returned to Iran. But the regime isn’t and the discs are actually being looked after and inadvertently raising awareness. Maybe a return one day, but until Iran has a government that truly values its own secular history and people, these artifacts are arguably safer where they are.

I mean, commercial success isn’t an objective indicator of quality, so I don’t really see how it’s relevant to the question of whether something is overrated lmao. If anything, the question of something being overrated directly challenges popular consensus, so it feels pretty obtuse to use that as a response to that specific critique. I also don’t really see the value in using that as a crutch in a debate about quality because it basically vacates you from having to assess the music yourself and you just point to the charts and say, “the masses like it, therefore good.” There is no objective metric for the quality of music and, like I said, if we were to use commercial success as that barometer, you would have to concede Taylor Swift is unquestionably the greatest artist of all-time, producing consistently high quality work. All conversations surrounding music and its quality are necessarily subjective interpretations of observable qualities of music (composition, production, structure, delivery) and that’s where the intrigue lies, imo. Responding to that conversation with stats about commercial performance is a total non-starter and is incredibly reductive to the conversation surrounding quality. Commercial performance has *some* weight in the conversation surrounding quality, but uncritically leveraging it as a trump card without any qualitative analysis of what tends to succeed commercially and why isn’t it especially productive. Not to mention, that asserting that commercial success is the only barometer is a massive roadblock to any meaningful or interesting conversation as it turns all conversations surrounding music into a battle of stats, making the music secondary to how songs perform algorithmically instead of discussing the music itself. A type of thinking that misses the forest for the trees, imo.
