Hi everyone, I’m here to talk about something that’s been bothering me since the release of Confessions II, and I think this is a good place to share it with my fellow monsters. I listened to the album and thought it was really good—I truly enjoyed it—but my enjoyment started to be overshadowed by the fact that, as the album began to receive positive reviews, a narrative against Gaga began to unfold, driven primarily by Madonna fans and even some monsters (or, at least, I sense a serious lack of enthusiasm when it comes to defending her). Specifically, there have been systematic attacks on Chromatica: a well-established—and largely unfounded—narrative that it’s a “bad” album, something repeated ad nauseam, to the point where I think it ends up making some monsters question their genuine appreciation for the album. At the same time, it’s very harsh—and even concerning—how Madonna’s fans can’t seem to enjoy the album’s relative success without dragging Gaga into it. It’s sickening; they’re out of their minds. It’s as if they’d been hiding under a rock for practically twenty years, lying in wait for Madonna to have anything resembling a hit so they could jump in to “cash in” on years of bitterness and resentment toward Gaga. It really strikes me because I don’t recall this being the situation—not even remotely close—when Mayhem came out. Sorry for the long post, but I’m really wondering how other monsters are experiencing this, because I don’t see anyone else speaking out about it. It seems more like a series of one-sided attacks, coming even from unexpected people (the straw that broke the camel’s back for me was seeing some older men talking about gay/pop culture in my country, who—in their video reaction to Confessions II—literally broke their long-standing silence—which had been conspicuous but respectful—regarding Gaga with negative comments about her). I’m concerned about the power of narratives when it comes to marketing-driven cultural consumption: the way something can be constructed as unambiguously good, positive, or successful, just as the exact opposite narrative can be spun about another phenomenon or product. I'd like to hear your opinions—always respectfully.

Taylor Swift. She has a very limited vocal range and the way she writes her songs became very predictable.

Recency bias hits every single Gaga album, this isn’t out of the ordinary. Chromatica is a great piece in Gaga’s discography, it shows Gaga can do a concise, cohesive album. It’s exactly what Monsters needed at the time, and without it we would never get Mayhem. Give it a few years and it will be praised again And let it be a form of flattery that Madonna stans can’t get Gaga out of their head.

I mean, those song and album chart stats answer your question. The One That Got Away came out in 2012 Legendary Lovers came out in 2013 Harleys in Hawaii came out in 2019. The only songs of hers that pull good numbers are throwback hits. Her last new release to achieve a BB100 spot was Woman's World at #63 - 2 years ago. Her 3 out of 5 singles since then have only made it to Bubbling Under, 2 didn't even make that. She's not had a Top 10 hit since Chained to the Rhythm in 2017. Her last #1 was in 2013. By definition, she's a throwback/legacy act who's maintained success relies on historical releases.

Its a shame. This site would be a lot better if more people actually wanted to talk about the artistry of new releases instead of the numbers of new releases.

He does this all the time. My first interaction with this user was them berating me for liking Harlequin and they used its streaming numbers as proof that it was trash and no one liked it. Just for disagreeing with them about the quality and charts as an indicator of quality, they threw an sh*tfit and said they were gonna spam me with the declining streaming numbers for the album every day (something they never did because they’re, ultimately, chickensh*t). Internet brainrot, I fear. Wishing them well.

Chromatica isn’t very good… But believe me, in a couple years people will get to that same conclusion with Confessions II. When Chromatica came out, people (fans and media) collectively pretended that the album was like the return of Jesus, for whatever invalid reason. That said, as a whole body of work, Confessions II is much better. Chromatica has 911 and Replay, though.

Nothings happening outside of twitter. No ones moving for Confession II aside from Madonna's hardcore fans which is a lot of course since she's a pop legend. But the album will probably crash without the GP's support. No ones comparing her to gaga anymore, especially with how Gaga reinvented sound and expanded her artistry to acting and actually get recognized.
