Schwerk 7,268
I think she meant that her parents weren't wealthy to begin with, but they worked their asses off to get to a place where they could do these things for her. They were fairly wealthy when Gaga was born, but they weren't always like that. I think she just meant her parents were very hard workers that always did what they could to provide for the family, and that's where her hard work comes from. THIS. I read in an interview once her parents got a great deal on the (small!) apartment when they the got it (bought it I believe). Plus she always mentioned how important it was for them to spend every penny on the education of their girls. Compared to schoolmates she probably was the 'poorest', not wearing the coolest clothes, having to work to pay for concerttickets, make-up and stuff. She was raised more working-class then upperclass in an upperclass environment. I do wish she would've explained this a bit better when she first started out, because people still talk **** about her over it. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch
RichAssPiss 4,959
She acknowledges that she grew up well. However, she really emphasizes that her parents worked for their money and were each the first persion in their respective families to go to college. She also stresses how compared to many of her peers at Sacred Heart, which included people like Paris Hilton, she was in a very different class socially and economically. She also discusses it here at around 6:00: http://youtu.be/FP_9eXhcF4g She says that she will not apologize for her privilege but wants to use the education she was allowed by her parents hard work and sacrifices for the greater good. She also identifies that it was her "achilles heel" for some time which suggests to me that she has felt some discomfort over people's perceptions of her upbringing. Little7Monster 0
She probably either got cut off from her parents money, or broke away to try to establish herself. Even kids of well off parents go broke. A parent's bank account isn't yours. I'm sure she could ask for money, but she is a very proud individual. Klinky 2
I think you need to keep in mind that a lot of this prices could have risen since when Gaga was in high school, but I still think there's no denying that she had an upper-middle/upper class upbringing. Economy 50,314
She already told us that her parents spent most of their money on hers and natali's education. Also (again) New York was cheaper in the 80s. this maybe too My grandparents are not rich... they are Portuguese immigrants... but they moved to Toronto in the 197-s when property was much cheaper They now own a house close to the downtown close to the tall buildings and the old house is worth some $800,000. But they werent rich, they just bought it at a time it was much cheaper
Conqueror 18
Gaga said her Dad was a working class man and worked hard and became successful. My Dad is the exact the same way. Maybe Gaga lied and her Parents were wealthy but she might not have said anything, because she feared it might make her less relatable to people. Willy Wonka 4
True, especially for the kids! Because upper middle class parents are often quite frugal and actually LESS likely to indulge their kids with things that mean "rich" to children. Lower class parents will often buy the latest Disney stuff, brand candy, shiny bikes etc. because they don't want their children to 'feel poor', they know how it feels and they don't want that for them... Whereas upper middle class folks are upper middle class for a reason: often through hard work, watching their money carefully and being picky about what they spend money on. They'll often splurge on education (schooling and extracurricular) but not on 'pointless' things like pokemon cards or those new nike airmax. The thing is of course that for kids education and a decent sized house in a good neighbourhood don't feel like wealth, while a 17 oz bag of tootsie rolls does. I can't even handle this comment. I don't know what to even say. There's a lack of logic.

Rainbowgynous 0
Your privilege is showing. Excuse me? I was kicked out of the house at 14 years old after being abused my entire life and you dare speak of privilege? My mom may have money to burn by now, I don't have a penny, nor my sanity. And yes, children who haven't known hunger or homelessness don't understand either, because they are CHILDREN They will understand later in life, but a child is a child, they understand things on their own level the bare necessities aren't even in question for them unless they've personally been deprived. Thank heavens for that because kids should be kids, not little worried adults.

Ladle Ghoulash 26,817
I don't recall her ever saying she didn't have money. she excuses it by saying she didnt come from wealth and her parents had to work hard for everything they had, basically she is being extreemely vague to get away with it There's nothing to get away with. There's nothing wrong with having money? We have forgotten our public MANNERS
WorkBeep 0
It was a stupid marketing tactic. It was a fabricated "back story" for the public to eat up so she was relatable.
RAMROD 110,168
Ehh, it was her parents money and house, not hers. So I don't think it's fair to take her that way. She was poor, but now she have money by her own efforts. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ What it meant to be content with you (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡
