MelbHawker 6,583
I think hype/promotion was as expected - the music was great. I think the whole 'ARTPOP' concept lacks substance. I was expecting extreme theatrics, different visuals (even for Gaga) and instead we got the opposite - toned down, conventional imagery. There have been glimpses of some really brilliant material in terms of visuals and all that - but for the most part this Era has been let down by matters that took place behind closed doors. It's quite obvious to me 'Applause' was dictated by her label and she was restricted so much as to what she wanted to do with it. DWUW (although an awesome song) didn't catch on because of the stuff that happened behind closed doors. Hopefully GUY/Tour/Act 2 can turn the Era around. Bye 3,947
I just fùcking cant at people that like Born This Trash to talk shìt about ARTPOP which is her best album to date. What a fùcking capital MESS Great way to argue....trashing others' and my favourite album when I've been defending ARTPOP in this thread. Also you just called Gaga's work trash, I'm sure it's against the rules here.

djBuffoon 12,115
I can't at all of you dying the first month it was released, and now just coz it underperformed, everyone thinks it isn good enough Let's not please. Seriously. And as for non-growing music... "Aura'", "Venus", "Sexxx Dreams", "Do What U Want", "Swine", "ARTPOP", and several others. Completely different from what we have heard from her in the past, and in many cases, her vocals dexterity was taken to places that sounded completely revitalized. The problem are the people that praise BTW as the best thing ever happened to Earth and talk shìt about ARTPOP which has way less flaws than BTW

The problem are the people that praise BTW as the best thing ever happened to Earth and talk shìt about ARTPOP which has way less flaws than BTW I know but you shouldn't call it trash. And the flaws argument is debatable. Anyway we're agreed that ARTPOP wasn't overhyped. It's just the queens on here who get overhyped if Gaga so much as farts. scrappy 302
Yes. I thought it was gonna have an original sound, a strong theme. I expected something almost alternative. Instead we got an extremely incoherent album with a sound which is not commercial enough for the charts and not innovative enough to gain critical acclaim, new fans or prove to some people that she really is an artist. Additionally some songs sound flat, the vocals are boring and lifeless, and some lyrics basic. "It's amazing, because she does not have to please anyone, and she is who she is," "Her first idea of how we should approach the music was just to be completely open – nothing is too crazy. Whatever is dope is dope. We do whatever we want, and we don't have to make a song that's 3 minutes and 30 seconds just to fit the radio." "I've done a lot of stuff that's really outside of what I usually do. There was one song that started from her just giving me, like, 10 words to describe an emotion, and then I had to make this into music. It's been a very experimental way of approaching music." What happened to this material?!!!
cometoogg 0
the media and the monsters overhyped it for no reason, it's just music
Guest
And she the prolonged "hype" wasn't really her fault. I think you're all forgetting she broke her hip and was in a wheelchair for 3 months...she was forced into prolonging the release. Wasn't it originally scheduled for an early 2013 release? That would've been the perfect time to release. It may just seemed overhyped because it was pushed back from the original release plan.

aaronyoji 2,054
everything said in the op is kinda true, but i honestly dont think it was her overhyping it, because i truly believe that she was/is capable of delivering music that seemed on par with her mission before the album was released, its just something must've gotten in her way, or derailed her into watering down her image/music and pander. obviously she was having internal management issues since before day 1 of ARTPOP's album cycle, because applause wasnt even gonna be on the album. i do feel like she's capable of so much more than what we got on ARTPOP, because as an album its just very self aware in every sense of the word-subject matter wise, production wise, its all very "walking on eggshell". and for the record, my opinion isnt influenced by charts, ARTPOP is legitimately a step down, regardless of some of its better moments, like aura, the DEMO version, the harmonizing in venus, the sophistication in s-x dreams and ARTPOP, her vocals are a lot better, but other than that, ARTPOP just wasnt executed as well or as strongly as born this way. i like to put it like this: ARTPOP is A+ material that is undersold and watered down to where it seems like B material, whereas born this way was B++ material sold as A+++++ material, meaning it was delivered in the most convincing, passionate way possible that it made one believe it was the best, which in effect does somehow make it the best.
