For the nth time, payola should never be confused with radio bias. The latter is a fact that happens everywhere, especially when business is involved. The former remains nothing but an accusation until actually proven with tangible evidence aside from the usual conspiracy theories online. Payola implies someone has to illegally pay for them to be played. Bias occurs when one is unfairly being overplayed compared to others. There's clearly bias on radio over those who have garnered hits after hits in a consistent basis. That's indisputable. 'Payola', however, isn't.  

 

There is legal payola. It has existed for ages.

 

Then there are the gray areas and labels find a way to take full advantage of those areas, and obviously some labels are more willing to push these lines to the edge or even over it than others.

 

You are correct, radio bias is always present. It becomes interesting when it is over and beyond what's typically seen, even for the successful hitmakers. That's what makes people wonder what type of payola (legal and gray area "benefits") record labels are going to for a particular artist's benefit. It also makes people wonder why the bias is so extreme, when it is above and beyond any other hitmaker.

Just watched the THIWD video. Really underwhelming too. Literally all the verses were taken literally and at the other parts you see random objects teenagers think are cool

at least it made the song sound a little bit less awkward!

And now listened to Anaconda. Really awkward. 'oh my gosh look at her butt'

 

and listened to Black Widow. Honestly it's pretty good, and the video (after the intro) is beautiful. The chorus is really nice!

IMO, the song is pretty catchy, I didn't like it at first but it grew on me, even though the lyrics are cringe-worthy and the message as well. But it just sounds so good!

Well, except for the last 45 seconds of the song where she literally sings the same thing over and over again

You are wrong. Like stated before, any song that consistently stays in the top 11-20 is fair game for Pop radio PDs. They know that there are rotating songs, especially at certain times of the year. They also have to balance their playlists with a mixture of ballads, dance, R&B, and rap collab songs. They might consider trying to balance males, females, groups and teen artists. They also might consider if the song is a debut, second, third, fourth, etc. single. At any given time, there will be several songs in the top 20 that Pop won't even consider playing.

Then don't.

And aren't you a fan? Well, I'm the same. Many here are the same. Fans who like to chart watch and a--lyze numbers, despite who their "faves" are.

Sure, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm just simply looking at the radio stats and patterns and drawing conclusions. The music boards I belong to, who have fans of many artists, feel the same about this obvious and unprecedented radio bias.

I'm just looking at numbers also and drawing the conclusion that DJs see Katy as a safe spin because of her unprecedented single success. Are they more likely to play her? Yes. But are people more likely to buy and listen to her records than anyone else in the game right now? Yes. That's why I don't see it as a bias. As long as she's the hottest pop girl of course radio will devour what she puts out. Gaga experienced the exact same "bias" and airplay dominance until Born This Way.

I am glad we were able to have a logical conversation about this thoughâ€â€a rarity on the internet and pop music forums.

i don;t really like it either sounds like a demo and verses are bad i like the bridge not the best verse form onika tho
