It's weird how Gaga was never really favoured by radio yet they dropped her not because of underperformance but mostly due to public reaction at her antics and controversies. Up till MTN (Judas was a dark horse) she never gave radio reason to doubt her commercial appeal and even MTN did good considering how fast radio dropped it. American Life, the album, was released at the height of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Not only was her lead single, the title track, was heavily panned by the critics, its original music video (its official release was cancelled) and its concept also caused so much controversy with its alleged anti-war and even anti-Bush "propaganda". The support for Bush and the clamour to end terrorism at that time were of course huge. And with the public / media perception that Madonna's supporting the "other party", it didn't bring her any favour. Since then, radio never supported her like they did before. Even her worldwide smash hits Hung Up and 4 minutes w/ Timberlake failed to top the HOT 100. She actually has never top the HOT 100 ever since American Life was released, and that album still remains as her 2nd least-selling studio album in the US, just behind MDNA. If there's anything to be considered as the biggest backlash in pop music history, then this gotta be it. Do you guys think Sam can get that BB #1 before Bass and Bang Bang take over? He's ahead of overall radio. His sales aren't far from MAGIC's, and he still continues to grow on On-Demand. Next week would be his best chance to top the HOT 100. If all of these still couldn't put him atop, then I believe that's it for him. The continued rise of Bass and then the songs to be performed on the coming VMAs led by Black Widow would be one tough competition for him. it's a hit in canada, i would love to see it smash in the US Loving Canada even more! Thanks for telling me :) Yep as a Madonna fan AMERICAN LIFE experienced major backlash especially in the UNITED STATES just like the Dixie Chicks. The album isn't that great i'ld give it 6/10 so it also wasn't successful as it wasn't really a strong follow up to MUSIC which sold 14million+ copies. I think sometimes when celebrities are vocal politically it can annoy fans who aren't in agreement with their views. Personally, I am turned off when celebrities start talking Politics. The album isn't that great i'ld give it 6/10 so it also wasn't successful as it wasn't really a strong follow up to MUSIC which sold 14million+ copies. It really can make celebrities lose fans but at the same time they can gain new fans. Seems like most people do hate artists or entertainers who take a political stance.
