I still can't get into ARTPOP

Let's get it right, I'm not a stan, I'm a regular fan

My posts are generally highly objective, especially because I remain realistic

It's kind of why I perch and generally stay on the charts thread (though I will sometimes post gifs and make edits etc)

Plus, some of the people on here are nice to message, so why wouldn't I stay here? :ohwell:

Explains a lot, tbh. ;)

Not really, but keep thinking that. :haha:

I love ARTPOP but I don't think that I'll ever have the same love for it as I do for Born this Way.

But, anything that anyone creates is going to be specific to them, you know? I think sometimes, too, with Gaga's work, on the surface it's not necessarily relatable, but most of her work can be broken down into universal concepts.

For example:

Applause: Doing what you love because you love it and because you want to touch other people, not for the money

Donatella: You doing you despite the haters or critics.

Dope: trying to overcome a personal struggle that inhibits you from loving people in your life that you care about.

ARTPOP: creativity, coexistence, the power of self-expression

And in regards to your comment about "anthems", the cool thing about Gaga's work is that I think they're all anthemic in their own way, you know?

Like, I think that Fashion! is kind of an anthem about exploring your personality through fashion or anything that makes you look and/or feel good. Do What U Want, in the context of Gaga's relationship with media, is an anthem that liberates you from what other people say about you because, at the end of the day, they don't own the essence of you.

But, I definitely see what you're saying.

I'll be completely honest. In my opinion, Gaga is not a brilliant lyric writer. She is great at writing super catchy pop songs with a solid hook, but she is not a poet. And her choice of words in her lyrics tends to be somewhat trite & leaves a lot to be desired...

I appreciate her as a passionate performer, I think she's a really great vocalist, and I appreciate her for her vision & creativity & determination & courageous spirit. And I think she's gorgeous.

But, I've never appreciated her for the written lyric element of her songs.

So, basically, I don't really relate to any of her songs - lyric wise. I cannot relate at all to lyrics like Donatella or Fashion or Aura, but I enjoy the energy of the song.

I get what you mean in a way I suppose, but like others said, you obviously don't need to relate to a song to enjoy it, but of course, to each his/her own. I also think what zebulonpyke said above is a great point, that though many of her songs aren't really relatable on a shallow level, there are still concepts there when you break it down that you can relate to, and I think this is one way I've learned to listen to Gaga's music and much of the music I listen to in general, because I rarely if ever relate to her lyrics and songs, so I just look for other concepts to connect to.

Also, I like atmosphere in songs too, I can't relate to Just Dance at all, but when I listen to it I like to pretend I'm a part of that atmosphere and I just think of the lyrics in a more abstract way than literally getting wasted, so I guess you can always try to look at things in a different perspective. And last thing about TFM, I didn't relate to it either lol, but I think a lot of that album (such as the song Monster) plays out almost like a fantasy, so I like to think of it sometimes like listening to a story or play, so I still get the entertainment value out of it even though I don't relate.

Anyway, that's just how I think of it sometimes haha, but we all have our own way of listening to things and you're entitled to yours. :)
