tokyodisko 0
To be quite honest, it's in the back of my mind sometimes when I listen to it but the only "redeeming" aspect of it is that it is a term applied to many. So in a sense it kinda softens the blow of it directly targeting a specific group of people. Not saying it's all good and completely "right". But that tumblr girl is kinda right when it comes to opinions. The people/group linked to a racial slur or appropriation or struggle etc. are the one's who should have the most say opinion wise. I was more bothered by Gaga's white girl dreads (which I know didn't come from a harmful place). It was annoying seeing monsters on this site make the constant, nagging implication that her hair must be "dirty" because it was dreaded or that she should "burn that wig". It's subtle but reminiscent of the subconscious attitudes people carry about people of colors' hair and aesthetics.A lot of folks need to realize that it's not just "fashion" and it's not just pop culture, these are peoples' lives and every day struggles. So when people feel like their lives and hardships are being trivialized they get upset. Which is understandable. People really try it though with Gaga extra hard just because they don't like her and that's just a waste of time. That's really interesting. I do agree that those involved should have more say, but a conventionally pretty privileged white girl telling me not to have an opinion because of culturally different definitions really annoyed me. haha You should post sometime about the dreads and see if you can get a discussion going on them. I didn't even think of that aspect. Side note, have you seen Good Hair? That was really interesting and eye opening for me.
ThreadKiller 0
haha I am sure. But it could have been an interesting music video. lol She was dressed chola enough on Judas :P
tokyodisko 0
Gypsy in spanish. Oh right! Like the Beyoncé song Amor Gitano with Alejandro Fernandez. Interesting. Was it used as a slur in Spain?
DIVA 666
I really don't think anyone would care. If the word gypsy really does mean something negative somewhere, I'm sure everyone is still smart enough to see the obvious good intention behind the song. But really, I don't think the world will notice or care. We're all Stronger Together!

DrewStevens 5,249
Oh right! Like the Beyoncé song Amor Gitano with Alejandro Fernandez. Interesting. Was it used as a slur in Spain? No, it's normal in Spain.

tokyodisko 0
No I've never seen it but I remember it was kind of a big deal when it came out! I need to watch it. Your threads always give me life. Asking the important questions. It's really fascinating. I live in a VERY white city. We had maybe 10 poc in my graduating class of 430something. Soooo yup. Though the city is becoming more diverse since which is great. I met a girl downstate though and she was more than willing to explain to me all the steps she goes through to make her hair straight. It sounds terrifying. I also learned the term kitchen from her. haha And thank you!! That really means a lot!! I always feel like most people get annoyed with my threads. lol And of course like any white guy from a small white city I am somewhat ignorant, that's why I like to post and discuss things. Ladle Ghoulash 19,550
?????? ???? ?? ???????? ?? ?? ??? How is gypsy even racist? It's a metaphor. The logic of saying that gypsy is a racial slur would be that it was used to marginalize and stereotype Romani people as nomads with caravans who played violins and fiddles etc. We have forgotten our public MANNERS
tokyodisko 0
No, it's normal in Spain. Interesting. I wonder where the term is used mostly as a slur. It's 3AM where I am, so maybe more European users will be on soon and have something to share. Also, I just realized it's 3AM and I need sleep. You mean THESE: Chola descent realness. CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! But really, eye make up was awesome, but the eyebrows look like a preteen boy trying to grow in a mustache.
BloodyTheNight 5
As a Romani gypsy, I don't find it racist. Neither does other gypsies I know. She's not saying anything bad about my culture in the song She's just useing it in a way where she's like a gypsy No home. Never in the same place for a long period of time. We used to be travelers (some of us still are) so no racist or offense to my people.

Yeah but that's so important and big of you to do. Asking questions leads to understanding. I always have this weird bond with other Gaga fans because our fave isn't basic. That sounds shady to others fanbases but what I mean is, so many people in this fanbase are artistic, creative and forward-thinking. And LOL "kitchen", she taught you well. Willy Wonka 4
I appreciate this thread so much.If you wanted your opinion to be validated, Gagadaily is definitely the right place. The users here are about as socially conscious as Paula Deen.
