I'm just so sad for Gaga because this confirms what I suspected for years that Gaga was a victim of rape. It explains so much. I didn't expect her to state it so bluntly, but I hope she feels more at peace now that she's been completely honest with us.  :(

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

Thank you for sharing, I'm glad I found this thread amid all of the Thoughts threads.

You write quite eloquently, by the way.  Thank you again for expressing yourself.

Furthermore, no, it did not trivialize bullimia. Bulimia is a disease of binging and purging. Millie was ingesting paint for the sole purpose of throwing it right back up. It's something she does in her own work. In other words, vomiting does not necessarily equal bulimia.

Learn to internet, dammit.

I know what bulimia is and I'm not saying what Millie does is bulimic. Bulimia involves ingesting food and waiting quite a while before throwing it back up again for the purpose of ridding your body of what you think is making you fat. Obviously, that's different from drinking milk and throwing it up a few seconds later for the purpose of abstract art and grossing people out. But it's still inducing vomiting and that is unhealthy. Because your body doesn't intend for you to throw up, you're regurgitating stomach acid which burns the throat and rots into tooth enamel. The process can lead to rotting teeth, inflammation of the oesophagus, mouth ulcers and so on. In severe cases, it can result in heart attacks and death. Regards of the intention, it still causes damage. While Millie may not be bulimic, she is making light of eating disorders by doing what she does. Bulimia is a crippling illness, as is any other vomit inducing illness. I think we'd all agree being sick is a horrible feeling. I don't think it's right for someone to take this traumatic experience and make it "artistic" or something you do for fun to gross people out. I thought Gaga of all people, having been bulimic, would know that this is a dangerous message to send to any bulimics. Surely accepting self-induced vomiting is the first step to making bulimia being normalised?

We knew this already though didn't we? She never mentioned it as explicitly as she did last night but she talked about it very openly before performing Swine for the first time at the iTunes festival. Or maybe it was obvious to me for other reasons? I thought it was already talked about...

And thanks again to everyone for your kind words and messages, I wasn't aware my words had the potential to cause an impact like that

I don't have much to say about it. As much as I dislike that type of performance art, I can understand why Gaga mixed a song about rape with vomit. It's something filthy, revolting, perverse and horrible for her. The performance is supposed to represent that. For most people the performance was simply disgusting, but I feel like for Gaga it was somehow theraupetic.

Art or not, the performance achieved its purpose: It received attention.

What she said at the iTunes fest could have been interpreted in various ways, really. I guess I just didn't want to admit the inevitable outcome.

As a fellow rape survivor, I agree completely. I found the performance poignant, empowering, cathartic, and healing all in one. It really touched me.

Im blonde, I'm skinny, I'm rich, and I'm a little bit of a bitch.

Let us not forget what this song is about. She said it before beginning to perform it. This song is about rape. This song is about taking that shame and darkness and learning to make love to it, make art out of it.

yes!

I totally agree with you. One of my best friends was bulimic for 12 years and barely made it out. She had to work so hard to recover from years of self abuse. It is extremely damaging. And yes, it is a crippling illness & an addiction.

But, i don't think that this performance is a dangerous message to send out to anyone - including people with eating disorders.

Why? Because by bringing attention to something, you aren't necessarily condoning it or "glamorizing" it as Demi Lovato said. A lot of times, bringing attention to problems and finding ways of exorcising them in a creative way is a necessary step in the process of liberation and healing. Both for the personal and for the societal.

I think it was art.  It made me a little uncomfortable but it also made me think - isn't that what good art does?

absolutely!

I agree, I personally don't think there was anything "glamorizing" in that performance. Also, while I can't speak for everybody, I doubt anyone would watch the artist vomiting paint on an apron canvas and think: "That looks appealing, I want to be bulimic"

As artists, it is neither Gaga nor Millies job to worry about every possible way that their work may be taken.

hmm, then whats your point? those performances i mentioned are branded by many as her best, specially Paparazzi, and all people saw the first time was a girl who possibly had a penis, doing weird faces, and then bleeding out randomly while singing about paparazzis

its the same effect, controversy and weird stuff gets people interested, and gets people to look more stuff about her, just doing something like singing G.U.Y with a kewl outfit and a nice choreo would have been forgotten in 5 minutes

I can't @ your description of the soon-to-be released G.U.Y video, it's so accurate sigh

Agreed, sometimes negative stuff needs to be brought out into the open, not hidden away, so we can talk about it and issues related to it and how we can change. Then again, I don't think we needed to realise that intentional vomiting is bad until now. Somehow, I don't think the public's going to get the whole underlying theme of rape in the performance, which is supposed to be the big talking point, though. Of course vomiting was not glamorized or encouraged, but it certainly condoned doing so for artistic purposes. "If it's art, it's ok" was the disturbing message I got from it. Gaga sometimes takes things too far in the name of art. Whether it's working with famed s-xual deviants like Terry Richardson or speaking in awe of Marina Abramovic's dangerous experiment of lying on a table surrounded by weapons and letting people do what they wanted to her, or making a vomit painter intentionally puke over her, Gaga is drawn to artists who live on the wild side. And that is a cause for concern in my mind for fear that she'll push herself to be more like them and end up damaging herself figuratively or literally. Reminds me of the days when she talked openly about drinking heavily and taking d--gs. I don't want anything bad to happen to her and it's just as well she's kicked pretty much all those habits so I don't have to worry like I used to. I'll be so glad when she reaches her 28th birthday in just under 2 weeks because she has all the makings of a future member of the 27 club.
