It does matter...since when did the GP not matter to a pop star or her career? :awkney:

You should watch the SXSW keynote interview.  Gaga explicitly said she would rather give it all up and go back to playing in bars than have to change herself for anyone or be told what she can and can't perform.

Gaga is literally prepared to end her commercial career and quit being a popstar if it means conforming or toning stuff down.

I second this, I encourage that person who kept talking about charts and the GP in this thread to go watch that keynote immediately

no performance has trascended just for an outfit or a choreo, regardless of the song

I meant about your comment saying even if Gaga performed GUY nobody would care after 5 minutes... :smh:

At the end, did you see how powerful that was? Her friends, from her past, hugged her and kissed her, never mind the fact that she was covered in someone else's vomit. That is recovery. That is the true path to healing.

That was an amazing thing you observed. The connection totally makes sense. It's a song about rape and rage- the portrayal of it SHOULDN'T be pretty, it should be honest and empowering for Gaga. And it was, and we should be happy she shared it with us the way she did.

Her wish may come true if she keeps it up tbh... I would hate for that to happen :omg:

The performance was great as regards the genuine punk rock element of it. Mainstream singers don't do anything truly shocking anymore. The only way they know how to shock is by being s-xual. No other mainstream artist would have the guts to do what Gaga just did, particularly a pop artist, whose job is to be public friendly at all times. Gaga's pushing the boundaries of what's expected of a popstar - she always sings live (and well), she puts on a real show, she's not afraid to look ugly or weird and now she's even prepared to do controversial experimental art pieces on stage that could make or break her career. That performance made Miley Cyrus's acting out at the VMAs look like afternoon tea with granny. No matter how shockingly s-xual she may be (or Rihanna, Beyonce, Xtina, etc). you know that none of them would ever go as far as having someone vomit all over them. It's moments like these that make Gaga stand out and why she will be remembered. Madonna didn't stick around by playing it safe (even back in her glory days, she wasn't being loved by everyone) and neither does Gaga, but she takes it so much further than just being outrageously s-xual and blasphemous. Most of today's generation are totally lost on the concept of punk rock performances and don't understand that this is supposed to make you feel dirty and disgusting. Gaga is totally a rocker in pop stars clothing and it's moments like these that remind of us of that.

But so saying...though it may not be her intention, the performance did trivialise bulimia. And I'm not on favour of such hard hitting issues being seemingly mocked and turned into a business opportunity. Ok, Gaga didn't force that girl to do this and she makes the decision to do this with her life, but that doesn't make it any better. You're aiding and abetting another person doing harm to their body. I thought that MB interlude was fake when I first saw it (it still could be, they were computer images, after all), but seeing it live was a completely different experience. I'm glad Gaga didn't do it herself (know that would have made me seriously concerned) but paying someone to abuse their body on her behalf really doesn't sit well with me. The performance certainly had its desired effect (as a fan, you may feel sick watching it but in a weird way enjoy it) but the ethical issues do concern me. As Gaga once had bulimia herself and supported this body revolution, it was a bit hypocritical.

I think it was art.  It made me a little uncomfortable but it also made me think - isn't that what good art does?

high heeled fem

thanks for posting this, she did it for a reason

I agree thank you everything you said is true and wonderful and gaga is so strong she's amazing and that keynote interview today was just beyond, im proud of her oprah5.gif and video next sat

I know it has a meaning, but the average person won't understand this...THAT'S the problem. I bet some in the audience were in shock that she did that... :omg: Unless you heard her explain the song or even know what the song is about...you STILL probably wouldn't know why she did what she did... :smh:

yeah but average is boring when has gaga ever been average? iGr5cXx3uU2q1.gif she is on a differently level she's a true artist, average people can go listen to katy perry, people who don't even like pop love and are drawn to gaga..

God bless this post.

I get sick of non-victims using their privilege to tell victims how to feel.

Furthermore, no, it did not trivialize bullimia. Bulimia is a disease of binging and purging. Millie was ingesting paint for the sole purpose of throwing it right back up. It's something she does in her own work. In other words, vomiting does not necessarily equal bulimia.

Learn to internet, dammit.

It's been such a strange night reading people's reactions to the performance at SXSW. There are some people who are convinced her career is somehow over, just because they did not like what they saw. There are people who feel personally offended, simply because Gaga no longer stays still in the pedestal they had built for her - but do you realize how unfair that is?

Let us not forget what this song is about. She said it before beginning to perform it. This song is about rape. This song is about taking that shame and darkness and learning to make love to it, make art out of it. So for those of you who don't "get it" and think it's "vile" (a word I saw around a lot tonight), let me explain. I am a victim of rape and I personally have lived what Gaga did on stage. You live, and suddenly someone vomits all over your essence, and leaves you so dirty, the kind of dirty you feel you can't scrub off no matter how hard you wash. It just keeps pouring all over you with every day that passes as you relive your experience over and over, willingly or unwillingly, you blame yourself, you learn to be comfortable with the vomit, because perhaps you deserved being puked on. Perhaps you were looking to get puked on. The turning point of the performance for me was that Gaga kept going. Do you see what I mean? She kept on living her music, dancing to her own beat, got back on the bull and rode it, embracing the very source of her filth.

I don't know if this will make sense to anyone, and I sincerely hope it doesn't make sense to you because you have experienced it, because truthfully nobody asks for the vomit. It just sort of finds a way to fall all over you. At the end, did you see how powerful that was? Her friends, from her past, hugged her and kissed her, never mind the fact that she was covered in someone else's vomit. That is recovery. That is the true path to healing.

All I ask is that you try to see the meaning behind all this. She is just a woman on her way to peace and comfort, like so many of us.

I love this interpretation of the performance. I thought it was an incredibly visually striking performance and perhaps to harsh for some fans, hence the negative response.
