I remember when Britney's Circus came out I couldn't find it in any of the stores in my area. It won't break records elsewhere and won't go down in history or anything. When Fearless, Speak Now and Red were breaking records in America, it wasn't doing anything spectacular worldwide. Saving the music industry means your album must have a worldwide presence. Adele was an example of someone who was saving the industry because her album was global and it caused a chain reaction, resulting in an upsurge of album sales in general for 2011-2012. Buying albums was suddenly "in" again because of her. 1989 will not start such a chain reaction because Taylor has never had that international power, even when she goes full-on pop. I cant believe people still think she's local. 1989 is literally #1 in 90 countries. That doesn't mean it'll actually go to #1 in the official charts in 90 countries. And it's only charting so well because there's no other big releases out at the moment, and there hasn't been any for a while. The only albums that people have made a big deal out of this year have been the ones from Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, and even those haven't exactly been massive. People are just ready for another album to go crazy over and since Taylor's pop style is more internationally friendly, she was the most obvious candidate. Outside of USA, Canada and Australia, her albums don't sell squat. I'm telling you, if any of these major regions get fed up with her, she's going to be done as a touring artist because she just has very little demand outside of her comfort zones, especially in non-English speaking countries. The ARTPOP tour wasn't a complete flop for Gaga despite Australia and NZ abandoning her this time around and Asia not showing her much love, but she still had other regions to fall back on, as befits a worldwide artist. You truly see how local or international an artist is when it comes to touring and as Taylor's tours show, around 80%, usually more of her tours, are US/Canada based. It took going properly pop for her to start playing large arenas in Europe and Asia and even then, she only did a handful and the only place she had demand for second dates was London. 2 cities in Europe and 6 cities in Asia (1 per country) doth not an international artist make. Most popstars schedule and sell out 3-4 gigs in Germany - Taylor couldn't even sell out one in the biggest city. And let's say most popstars actually tour the whole UK, not just London. And remember that she has little demand in Africa (though South Africa is warming to her, it seems) and zero demand in Latin America and the Carribean. Overall, she has demand in one and a half continents (only the top half of the Americas is interested). So, yeah, I'd class that as local. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Britney's record was for Oops with 1.32mil on it's first week. Circus' first week was 505k. I don't see Taylor breaking Brit's record or anyone else in the near future for that matter. Taylor is popular outside of the US. Swift hasn't had two million boyfriends. There are a ****load of people buying this album all over the world. Cersei 56 Posted October 28, 2014 Share Posted October 28, 2014 Thinking about it, she hasn't had an album that hasn't had huge debuts, and this can't be solely down to fanbase considering that Gaga/Katy have much louder fanbases and can't seem to shift numbers that high at all! Who else do you know which sells like Taylor? Very few, I find it very commendable and it's good to see that it is still possible to have 900,000+ debuts in 2014. 1M debuts feels so 1990's and it's actually pretty remarkable to see! The music industry is not dead, if an album can still debut with 1M then the industry is still there!
