Luc 4,775
I think that's saying that there were 7.5M illegal downloads last week, only up to 11.5k+ daily being Gaga. This is WW as well I think, Italy is just the most torrented country this week. Oh, that could be the total downloads, that'd make sense. Just not of all artists, just Gaga but then her whole career. Luc 4,775
Nobody here buys music, at least among young people. I'm the only person I know that buys CDs in my school Only adults buy albums, but they buy local artists or Adele. That's why 21 will be diamond soon and local albums easily sell 200k-300k copies while foreign albums struggle to reach platinum (60k). We do have Spotify, the fact is, nobody wants to spend money on an album when you can easily find it for free. Gaga has a strong fanbase here, but that's it. Here music seems to be quite popular, perhaps higher education is connected to people who buy albums more often, but I know quite a few people in my class who buy like 2 albums a year. My country is a small market though, non-local albums (except for 19 and 21 those are 7x and 9x platinum respectively) always fail to scan gold or platinum, and lots of people use Spotify. But I guess the majority of this country is 34-55 years old so those alt rock Adele AC indie rock kind of songs ususally dominate. But yeah, almost nobody buys singles or digital albums because it takes away from the experience of just having it with a small booklet.

Spotify is becoming quite popular in Italy, but nowhere as relevant as in other european countries. Actually I think that some promo here would be really beneficial. I can't think of any big promo spot because X Factor has just finished, but just Gaga coming to Italy would be a huge event and would get covered by the media. Nobody cares when popstars like say, Katy Perry, come here, even if they're successful, but everybody goes crazy when stars like Gaga, Madonna and maybe One Direction come. Our biggest newscast always airs something about Gaga when she comes here for the tour or a new video is out. It would spark a new interest in her and maybe people would get to know about her album. She came here twice, once during Poker Face promotion on a floppy tv show with a cringe-worthy and dumb interviewer, and then for the gay pride thing, but that wasn't promotion. That is exactly the biggest advantage of Gaga! She can attract the media because she is very creative and interesting.

MonsterOfSpain 8,318
ohh... I didn't understand you! Well, that's obvious with the video and more radio support :) I don't think it's that obvious tbh.

I think that Gaga focusing on smaller markets (and Japan) is much better, the whole country gets to know you have a new album out, who you are, that you're going on tour, how sweet you are, how talented you are, etc. For some reason Gaga appearing in Japan also generates a lot of press there, eventhough it's a huge huge market. But I really think that going to Brazil or Italy for tv performances, interviews, radio interviews, magazine inerviews, radio performances and like a mini-concert (Monster Hall-like) in lots of smaller markets where she has a big fanbase could do wonders. After all, when an artist does promotion in the US: How much does it help the song? Like not at all. It helps the song sell like 20% extra for a week, but that effect is lost very fast. In smaller markets and Japan, promotion does a lot more (not sales-wise though) - Unconditionally went #6 in Italy (thanks to a discount and the performance) and has gained a lot of momentum thanks to one performance. Imagine if Gaga went there, DWUW could've gone like #1 there and became a huge winter hit. Not just Italy by the way, there are tons of countries. I'll say Adele for example: due to smart promotion she's the biggest pop star here, 19 and 21 went 7x and 9x platinum respectively while albums by Gaga, Katy and Rihanna fail to go gold. Why? Because 19 and 21 had massive tv promotion for a small country like this, Rolling in the Deep and Chasing Pavements both had like 3 TV performances here - more than Gaga's US promo for Applause - and lots of interviews, which caused lots of buzz and press too. While if she went to promote like this in a country like the UK or the US, it wouldn't have 1/3 of the effect it had here.

Of course in the US you can do 50 shows and in Italy no more than 3 or 4, but being big in lots of small markets really benefits a tour. DWUW has little exposure here, if she came to promote the song it would be huge. Italy is the only country where Unconditionally became a hit ( ), thanks to one performance. Actually I think that with an acoustic performance here Gaga's sales would skyrocket. She's still viewed as 'the rah-rah singer'. Nobody knows that she can sing. I mean, she has similar issues in other countries too, but at least in the US people get a chance to see her performances. Some months ago a friend of mine was using my iPod and he found some acoustic performances I have, and he was like 'OMG she's great! I don't liker her songs but her voice is amazing, why doesn't she stick with things like these? I didn't know she could sing this good, you should have told me'. So something like a Gypsy performance with the piano would be extreme slayage PS: sorry for these super long posts

It was part of her worldwide promotional tour. Look in Germany. She promoted her album by doing an online listening party and some interviews. Her performance in Italy was shown on tv by multiple tv stations. For me thats promotion and a good one. I also think that people in Italy who arent gay friendly wouldnt have buy Born this way anyway. The biggest difficulty of BTW era wasnt the gay element, but the extreme make up and the religious controversies, but I dont think we want to talk again about BTW. ' I believe the only country where Gaga's truly seen as a talented, sweet and successful artist is Japan and perhaps Taiwan.

I mean that her intent wasn't promo. She didn't' say 'Oh I'd like to promote TEOG, look at that promo spot in Italy!'. In fact she never comes here for promotion, that was a one time event because of her LGBT support. Her promotion in Germany is different, her goal (actually, her label's) was to promote the album and she did interviews etc. And even if the performance at the gay pride got covered in the media, it didn't have such a big impact here, and that's because everyone was probably like 'ew gays'. Her advocacy for LGBT rights isn't well known here because well, nobody bothers listening to her english interviews done in the US, and nobody really pays attention to foreign lyrics. So people would buy her album regardless of the gay element, if it isn't exposed, and BTW did great here. But the pride performance was different, that was obvious gay support, and Italy is a homophobic country.
