I have grown to love the ARTPOP era and album for what it is.

However, one of my main regrets was that 'Venus' was never given a video treatment. I daydream whilst listening to the song what it might have been about, the visual aesthetics, production and editing.

 

Theme and Story

I would have based the video as a basic visual telling of the story of Pygmalion and Galatea.

 

For those who don't know, the basic story is an Ancient pan-Hellenic story about a man (Pygmalion) who creates a beautiful statue sculpture. The statue is so beautiful that he is mesmerised and falls in love with his creation. He prays to Aphrodite, who then brings the statue to life as a woman (Galatea), and the two are married.

 

I think thematically, it fits perfectly with the overall themes of the song (love, s-xual attraction, Aphrodite Goddess of Love, and Classical mythology). It also fits in with the overall theme of the album, Classical Greek and Roman mythology being a recurrent theme and motif, but also the idea of 'creation' and loving your art.

 

Also, tidbit: George Bernard Shaw's play 'Pygmalion' was adapted as 'My Fair Lady' in the 1960s - which Gaga has named as one of her favourite films.

 

Aesthetic & Style

Venus is clearly a sonic indulgence. The song isn't particularly deep or meaningful on a face-value, but it is a rich and luxurious soundscape and an ode to the 1970s; to disco-glam rock; to mid-20th century science fiction and to Classical mythology. I would have then given the video a very lush, textured appearance that draws upon all these. I guess it might have looked similar to this, though I would like it to be its own distinctive entity. Struggling to find some images to convey this, so here's just a 'mood board' of different concepts to draw on:

 

I am not sure if Gaga would play one or all of the characters - I actually quite like the possibilities that are given by having Gaga create and fall in love with herself - either a critique of her own vanity of self-image; a metaphor for her ability and desire to reshape her sense of self; or her love and marriage to her artistic creations.

 

What do you guys think? Do you have your own concepts for what a 'Venus' video might have been?

I have my own concept, but it's not as good as yours:

Gaga would rise out of the sea like in The birth of Venus (and sing on the beach)

Then walk into a gallery which has a rave

She would also be on the top of a hill in a small temple

And maybe her as a statue

And the fibre optic wig lights up at the end

Throughout she would wear the seashell bikini, venus wig, fibre optic wig, white toga thing and crystal outfit of some sort

I don't have my own concept but I wish she would've done something with this visuals

And spacey/red green and purple themed :P
