She's not the only one who has used Payola a good judge that payola was used is look at how many copies it has sold and how many weeks it has been in the charts.

It hasn't sold badly but not heaps for a top 10 song that has been in there for like 12 weeks.

That's more about streaming eating into itunes sales.

Applause was in top 10 on itunes until the last couple weeks.

There are songs by Rihanna and others with more radio and less sales.

Payola exists, though in a much different form than it used to. Clear Channel's organized airplay deals which somehow have passed the test of legality aside, wooing program directors with gratis lunches and such is the new norm. It's not as overt as it once was, with a concrete offer of money in exchange for airplay. It's more of a "wink wink, I know what you want, and you know what I want, but we won't explicitly say what that is" thing.

Ok fair point. See I am getting educated. I accept that!

A better term would be schmoozing. You do interviews, iheart radio, jungle bell ball, etc. They play you is your song is decent. Same way you get better reviews if you kiss ass and give publications interviews and cover stories, which Gaga didn't do as much this time.

Sales are always low this time of the year. That's why "Royals" has just recently passed 3 million sales. It would be above 4 million if it have been slaying in the spring.

Digital sales

1. The Monster - ~300,000 without the complete my album feature, but it's just in its second week

2. Say Something - 189,000

3. Royals - 186,000

4. Counting Stars - 152,000

5. Roar - 136,000

6. Wake Me Up - 126,000

7. Wrecking Ball - 121,000

8. Timber - 119,000

9. Let Her Go - 118,000

10. Demons - 110,000

** Applause - ~80,000 without the CMA

I love your comments, you're giving me a new perspective. A perspective that this forum needs.

I think a good selection of singles is the key if this album wants to see longevity! Low first week sales are a bummer, but definitely not a defining factor for the era :)

Not prediction being so low. Anyway I really expect the true numbers to be higher! Also I think it is very unfair that buying 10 copies by the same fan counts as 1 sales. Otherwise they must return to buy each one seperately

Who cares if it debuts at 1/2/3 or 100?

I am a Madonna fan - I don't love Lady Gage but I don't mind some of her songs.

Madonna has definitely had her ups and downs career wise and even Ray Of Light her awesome album that went 4x Platinum debuted at number 2.

Why is everybody having meltdowns?

It shows that many of you are shallow and only support Gaga if she is number 1 or has stellar sales.

A true fan would stick by Lady Gaga.

I love Madonna even after the Hard Candy crappy album. I like MDNA but I absolutely don't love it.

I think the gp takes issue with Gaga because she set the bar too high for this album - if she shut her mouth about all the artistic crap and just relaxed with the music she would not have pissed so many people off.

Finally, it's great to mock artists when your favourite is "slaying" [i hate that word] but your favourite act can't always be number 1!

I think I've raised valid points without being too critical - I'm just trying to tell you guys to take a breather it's not the end of the world!

Another thing, judging by the relatively low sales I don't think this album will have longevity. I didn't say it was crappy I just think it will struggle. I actually don't mind "applause" and "dope."

agreed!!

also not to forget the "Erotica" era where Madonna suffered a huge backlash from media and GP and her next album "Bedtime Stories" opened with very low numbers. But after that "Ray of Light" came along......then again with "American Life" and so on...

also not to forget that during 1989-1991 Paula Abdul had 6 consecutive number #1's and Whitney Houston during 1985-1987 had 7 consecutive number #1's....Madonna was still the #1 pop star without many number ones...all i'm saying is that numbers don't matter that much as long as the music is enjoyable....Who is influential/creative/pushing boundaries etc..we all know....it was certainly not Paula or Whitney...and neither is Katy.....

Ahhh #1!! Keeping the positive vibes together with her. She's never looked so damn cute today and yesterday at H&M opening. I literally said that's my queen right there

Givewaytopeds

DWUW video better be good, imagine a single launched at the same time as the album not making top 10.

If that happens, hopefully they choose better singles for the Lady Gaga brand, like Aura.  Who wants to buy Lady Gaga singing like Christina.
