The movie snatched an additional $10.8 million on Monday, bringing its total domestic gross to $163.3 million, and the worldwide gross to $222.6 million. It is also now the 4th highest 4-day grossing film, after only HP7.5, Dark Knight, and Transformers 2.

SPOILER ALERT

I finally watched it yesterday and I have to say I was very satisfied with the movie. I was afraid it was going to be a little watered down since it was PG-13 but it wasn't. The part I was mainly looking for was Glimmer's deformed body after the tracker jacker attack and it was well done. I liked how they kept cutting in with the hosts to help explain things that the audience may not have known if they didn't read the books. The only thing that left me wanting more was the relationship between Rue and Katniss if I hadn't read the books I wouldn't have really cared about her that much but they still did a good job. I was almost in tears when she died and my friend Kassandra was sobbing. I think i heard someone in the theater crying as well.

I didn't read em, and I was still sad when Rue died.

I assumed their relationship was more than what was shown.

I didn't cry, but I heard sniffles behind me, so I turned around and there was this fat guy mid 20's SOBBING! :smh:

I had to contain my laughter, cause it was too damn funny.

So I finally got back from seeing it!

Be warned- spoilers for the movie and all three books are mentioned.

My general reaction is very mixed. The pacing of the movie was nothing like the books. I feel like being a fan of the books, I'm somewhat forced to like the movie. And I've gotta say- I was really impressed by it. But it just...left out so much. On the other hand, if I didn't read the books, I think I would really like the movie. But who knows.

What I was most impressed with is the content that the movie added. The control room scenes and the scenes with Snow were fantastic. Amazing contribution, although this will not play in the movie's favor for Catching Fire, since the audience shouldn't be aware of the gamemaker's alternative plans.

What I was most unimpressed by was again how much was left out. So much, too. The lack of hovercrafts picking up the bodies. Katniss finding water on day one, when she should have taken forever to find it. Peeta not having his leg amputated. Peeta not knowing about Katniss and Haymitch's plan about making the romance fake. The lack of Haymitch. The lack of District 12 buildup. The lack of explaining what the significance of a mockingjay is. Katniss getting the pin from Greasy Sae, then giving it to Prim, then Cinna somehow magically got it. The lack of explaining Cinna and Katniss' relationship. The lack of the other stylists. The lack of explaining the Avoxes, and that one Avok's background. The lack of adding the eyes to the mutts at the end. The lack of the medicine that knocked out Peeta so that Katniss could go to the feast. The lack of time while in the Capitol. The lack of Katniss running from the training center and crying after she had shot the arrow at the pig. And I thought it was kinda odd that those in the control room didn't have any type of crazy outfits or altercations to their bodies. Oh, and I don't recall them saying anything about how Peeta has brothers, although that wasn't all that important.

And really, so much of that could have been there. There is a ****ton of stuff that couldn't be in the movie simply because it was told in Katniss' mind in the book. The only way to explain those things, which were mostly background stories, would be through numerous flashbacks or just telling the movie through a first-person narrative. But the things I listed all easily could have been in the movie without that.

BUT, the stuff that was in the movie, I feel like most of it was done fine. Sure there was a lot that was missing simply because of the first-person narrative cockblock, but it seems like they hit MOST key points, although not all. Hopefully in the second movie they can explain a lot more about the rebellion and Panem as a whole before delving into the victory tour. I enjoyed the riot scene in District 11- that was a nice preview for Catching Fire. I reallyyyyyy liked how evil Snow looked at the conclusion of the movie. Although, again, it's upsetting that they didn't put in the part of Peeta finding out about Katniss' and Haymitch's plan. Hopefully they'll put that somewhere in Catching Fire, since it's kindaaaaa important. I guess they couldn't have put it in this movie without expanding on Haymitch (which I wish they did..)

I can go on and on, but here's a summary of what I think- it wasn't the best, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It wasn't on the same level of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Twilight adaptations (for what I know- I never actually read any of those books). But I hear that they at least were pretty precise, and didn't leave out as many details. BUT, it could have been a lot worse. It seems like they tried to fit in as much as they could. And who knows, maybe they'll cram it all into the next movie and make it a little longer, seeing as how they could get away with it after the success of this movie. And there certainly have been much much much worse book adaptations. Take for example The Series of Unfortunate Events, where they tried to jam three books into one movie. And that didn't work so well.

It was a really entertaining film, and at least that's good. It made its own pace and it worked for it, although the pace of the book was a lot better. I wish the character development was deeper. I feel like if I hadn't read the books, I might not have been as attached to Katniss or Peeta or Gale or Haymitch or Cinna. But at the same time, I probably would have caught on to some of the things, since it seems like they tried to cram a lot of the backstories into the movie by simply shortening way we saw. For example, you could tell Cinna and Katniss somehow got to a very friendly relationship after she tells him that she really likes him, and that he likes her. I could have figured that Snow didn't approve of Katniss due to his looks at the end. But I would have never been able to tell that he didn't really like the mockingjay pin that she wore.

Overall the film was great. Better than good, but worse than amazing. I'd give it a B-

Kay,

I didn't read the book but I read your review,

I don't think anything you said they missed would have made the viewing experience more enjoyable for me or anyone who didn't read the book.

Also, I 100% disagree with what you said about this being worse than HP and Twilight, this was by FAR better than the last 4 HP movies, and ****s on Twilight. I am a uber potter stan, but the movies are over complicated, extremely hard to follow and not really the best movies.

This movie was crisp, flowed well, and I felt involved and not talked down to.

If they kept in all those non-essential things you said it would have been too long and over complicated.

This was a GREAT movie, and that is why It's doing so well box office wise,

because it's easy to watch for someone who hasn't read the books.

Oy! I totally forgot to mention that I went to see the movie with someone who hadn't read the books. She really liked the movie, and was disgusted at how the people in the Capitol were so happy about killing the kids. She was really horrified by how those in the control room acted. This was shocking to hear, since she lovessssss crazy death things in films. Like, she's obsessed with Sweeney Todd and movies like that. But to hear that she found the Captiol citizens even more evil than a man who cut throats while singing lightly...that is just amazing.

Like I said, I don't know personally how well the HP and Twilight movies were adapted from the books. Overall though, I do prefer THG movie over the Potter movies...but I hate Potter anyways >_> And I've never read or seen Twilight.

I think I would need to see this movie again in order to really judge it solely based on the movie. Which will be difficult, since I have so much in the back of my mind about the differences from the book. Hopefully after seeing it a bagillion times, I can appreciate the movie more without linking it to the book. The movie perfectly adapted the parts that it included, but just so much was left out that made the books sooooo much better for me. SO READ THE DAMN BOOKS!!! Please. :)

I'm probably going to.

I have NO IDEA where this series even came from?

When did it get popular?

Who started the trend?

I had NEVER heard of it until the movie trailer came out!

Me neither :deadbanana:

I had seen the books and heard briefly about them for some time, but knew nothing about the actual plot. More of my friends started talking about the series once advertising started for the movie. BUT it wasn't until the full trailed was released that I actually knew anything about the plot. Even when the short teaser trailer came out beforehand, I had no idea what was going on :dead:
