Gaga: "Judge me on ARTPOP, not success of Applause"

She used as little hype as possible for this record. And the expectations are mainly set by the image of Gaga that is stuck in our head since THE FAME MONSTER times when she was almost ruling the world .Good music doesn't always mean outstanding commercial success, that's what should be learned I guess.

Excuse me what?

Of course it does!

That is why Katy is where she is today, for example.

To the GP, there wasn't much hype, but with her fans, she hyped ARTPOP to the high heavens.

We have been waiting for ARTPOP for well over a year, her self-labelled 'comeback', where she said each song could be hit. And don't get me started with the promo shoots she kept tweeting...

There was no hype comparing to the pre-BORN THIS WAY times, she was just constantly informing us about the creative process progress.

Cause if you witnessed what happened to the large part of the fanbase back in spring, when she was keeping silence after the hip surgery, when she didn't even drop a single word, how people were going crazy and melting down, begging Jesus, Buddha and anybody to just release the announcement of the announcement :derpga: , you can imagine what could have happened if she were completely silent about even her creative process so that our expectations don't get too high.   The fanbase couldn't have withstood 2 years of silence :smh:

You guys can be so annoying sometimes. Applause is not close to be a flop. Take a chill pill, Okay? OK.

Now you heard what the queen said. Even ARTPOP to me is already groundbreaking.

So if a song doesn't reach commersial success, it's a bad song?

is your taste controlled by the charts?

Lose control. Let go and fall. Do you get the satisfaction?

I don't get if this is a joke, but if it's not, I'll try to figure it out.

Katy released an album in 2011 which was the first ever since Michael Jackson's BAD to land 5 No.1 hits on Billboard. However, she sold around 2.8 M copies of the album over the course of 2 years.

Taylor Swift only gained one No.1 single frim RED, yet she mover over 3.8 M copies in the USA only.

There's ARCADE FIRE's record Suburbs which won Grammy for Album of the Year, but moved just around 500,000 copies in the USA.

And there's ADELE who got 10 M from her latest record within US.

What I'm trying to point out is that all of those albums are considered to be good in their genres, but only Adele got that fat, enormous, huge commercial success. Comparing to her other artists should even question their existence, but they never should. That's it: good music doesn't always mean OUSTANDING commercial success.

Levine

She was a singles + albums artist during The Fame era tho

And that's one of a kind and a rarity that doesn't last for 2-3 albums.

it's really early to tell the overall success of Applause. anyways, it's a horrible single choice imo

No, there are lots of great not successful songs (I am a Lana Del Rey fan btw )

What I am saying is, if a song becomes successful, it has a reason. And the reason is, the song is good. People are buying it, it brings in the money and people WANT it. Now, this couldn't happen if the song wasn't great. Y'all are shading Blurred Lines but it's better than the majority of the stuff we got from Gaga over the years.

I know, I was trying to make a point to the contrary :)

What I mean is, if a song becomes successful, it does because it is a good song, and deal with it. Like just because you don't like the song doesn't mean that it's a bad song, it reached that coveted #1 place for a reason.
