So I've been using MS Paint but I want to go beyond that.

I've heard GIMP is the free equivalent to Photoshop but is it good for begginers? Let me know ;)

I use GIMP, but only for basic things, it's very easy for us the begginers.

Hot Space

If you really wanna use photoshop you could just download it illegally. I never used to understand how it worked but I just looked up tutorials. You can find a lot of helpful stuff on tumblr. :)

Next step would be Paint.NET
It is like Paint, but adds more features, it helps to learn Photoshop

I use the newest Photoshop, but it harder than just Paint/Paint.NET

I like dancin', and ponies....

i think photoshop is easier to use than gimp, and you'll find more resources (brushes, patterns, gradients, etc)

The Gimp is powerful and free, but not necessarily easy to use. I don't know what's better, though.

I used to use a program called Paint Shop Pro, but that was a long time ago. It was definitely more straightforward than the Gimp.
