Azealia Banks

Banks' music walks a similar tightrope - balancing cheeky humour with a string of profanities, like Tarantino dialogue set to house music.

:flutter:

The new material is being recorded with British producer Paul Epworth - a man better known for his work with Adele than blunt, bratty rappers.

"I'm going to drag another side of Paul out," says Banks.

"I'm really DIY, and he's very polished. But you're definitely going see a darker side of Paul and a more refined side of me. That's what it has to be about."

Paul's a genius. I'm so ready to hear what they've both come up with.

...As a result, the album will have bigger melodies and fuller arrangements than the stripped-back minimalism of Banks's YouTube tracks. But the fruity language won't be toned down.

The rapper says her lyrics mirror the way she speaks to her friends. The swearing isn't meant to cause outrage, and even the s-xualised 212 is meant to be inclusive.

"A lot of people aren't comfortable with their s-xuality," explains Banks.

"There are women who are curious about other women and haven't had the courage to go there.

"One person said to me, 'When I listen to 212, I feel that someone understands me. I feel like I have a best friend telling me that all these things that I want to do are ok.'"

Banks doesn't just want to break s-xual taboos, however. Liquorice, her next single, tackles inter-racial relationships.

"It is a taboo among black women to desire white men, and vice versa," she says.

"But if you read websites or magazines that are geared towards African-American women, we're very curious about white men. And the world is becoming so mixed up now, it's happening a lot more.

"The song is really funny and quirky. I feel like that will be the most exciting moment of my career so far."

Even more exiting than being shortlisted in the BBC's Sound Of poll?

"I don't want to be called the 'next big thing' because that implies there's another big thing after you.

"The media does a really good job of discarding artists - and it has a really big effect what people think about themselves. So I try to keep a lot of that talk out of my head.

"I'd rather be a dope artist that people are just starting to find out about."

Legit think she's gonna become absolutely massive in this country.

I love 212 but not really into her other songs that I've heard. The video for 212 is so ****ing cute. She obviously has a real and lovable personality. It's amazing how many genres are in 212 tho.

She's more M.I.A. than she is Nicki or Lil Kim tho.

this.

Edit: Wait she's working with Paul Epworth? That man is a GENIUS!

I was all  after I'd listened to '212', and the found out she's American. I do believe she's UK-based now, though.

Haha, I kinda realised when she was singing about the NYC Area Code! But at first I did think "Oooh is she from the UK?!".

On the whole Kreayshawn thing, I can totally see what Azealia is saying. I mean, Kreay seems to be being a sneaky b---h about it, but the retweeted of ****hub saying "Check out Azealia Banks" just seemed so "Ha. You're being advertised on ****Hub - shows how classy you are!" - but she kind of did it in a "I can totally cover this up to seem like the better person" kinda way.

Idk, maybe something happened that we're not aware of. But either way, I'm not a fan of Kreayshawn's music.

Idk, maybe something happened that we're not aware of. But either way, I'm not a fan of Kreayshawn's music.

as a pretty big kreayshawn follower, i can honestly say that i don't believe she had ANY malicious intent. i understand that i'm biased, but i'm also a fan of azealia and i have been for awhile. kreayshawn has already been through enough drama with the whole rick ross thing to know to keep her mouth shut. aside from the rick ross thing (which was the result of one of her friends leaving her webcam on after a ustream session) which were jokes she thought she was making in private (and yes, a line in her song left eye), i can't recall ever hearing her talk negatively about another artist. and again, i've been following her for a year, have watched/read every interview, etc etc etc.

azealia, on the other hand, i DO remember having similar outbursts on twitter. i never really paid attention to them because they were never anything i cared about, but this reminded me of them. if you go through her page you'll see her constantly retweeting hate comments directed at her. she's looking to fight. i love her music, but i think that she's going to get herself into trouble if she doesn't start to control herself a bit more.

kreayshawn retweeted a joke that someone else made which i didn't even think was offensive in the first place. and not only is that the first time i've ever seen her acknowledge azealia, but azealia even admitted through her series of tweets that that tweet was her entire basis for attacking kreayshawn. she clearly already hated her, though, saying she can't rap, has seen her "trying to be cute and funny" or whatever, etc. it's not like those opinions formed the moment she heard about kreayshawn's tweet. she already had HATE toward kreayshawn for reasons that would, for another person, just be annoyances.

like i said, i was a fan of azealia before this and i'm still going to be an azealia fan after. i'm just shocked that this even happened, and i truly don't think kreayshawn intended any harm. and i can't even say that she should have been more careful with her remark, because it was harmless. especially when you consider the lyrics to 212.

In her photo for Vogue Italia, she is dressed so well, and looks brilliant. Her shoes look brilliant. Usually, I hate Creepers, they rarely look good, but she makes them look great.

Wolf Boy

Can't turn 212 off. Love it.

Liqorice is growing on me a little too, though i don't love it yet and i'm too busy with 212 to let it grow.

I like her music but if shes throwing shade at Nicki already, she can gtfo.

She loves Nicki, tbh, but she just thinks that she isn't that original. She is always listening to Nicki's music!
