Bloody Mary

Hi guys!

So sorry I've been gone forever. Work has been way too time-consuming for me to make time for GagaDaily recently, but I've just now been able to at least peruse the boards every now and then. I've missed an entire album era on GGD! Also, I know this may sound like "old news," but since I've been gone and have been unable to communicate any words of congrats I wanted to add that I'm so proud of our Emma, who seems to have made a really genuine impact in the Haus and in the fan community. Also, I'm so honored that you guys kept my emoticon! :saira:

Musically, I think ARTPOP is fantastic. Conceptually, the album flows almost as well as The Fame Monster did. It lacks the disjointedness and thematic chaos of Born This Way for sure, and has a very sleek and sophisticated sounding production to it. However, I also feel like Gaga's 2-year hiatus really put her behind her competition, industrially speaking, because in the time that she's been gone the music landscape has changed drastically. Yet she's still making similar music to what she was making during "her prime." It comes across to the general public as though she's just resting on her laurels, rather than venturing into new genres and creating something original, and I think that's why the general public has become sick of her. Non-fans feel like they've already seen all that she's capable of. They think she's a one-trick pony, musically speaking. We as her fans of course know that she's a brilliant songwriter and producer with diverse talents, but the general public isn't getting that from her in the ARTPOP era.

The reason that the likes of Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry are still doing well despite NOT taking risks musically or otherwise is because Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry are not known for being innovators or trendsetters. That's not what they're famous for. Gaga, on the other hand, is expected to always evolve and push the music landscape's boundaries. That's just what the public has come to expect of her based on the previous track record she established for herself.

Perhaps another reason why ARTPOP feels out of place in the current music landscape, in particular, is because it now it seems like all kinds of alt-rock artists are dominating the Hot 100 chart. Traditional forms of catchy, chart-topping "pop" music are no longer really part of a separate "pop" music genre as they have been in the past; instead, "pop" music is now just defined by whatever the public decides is popular, e.g. Lorde, Imagine Dragons, Fun, The Neighbourhood, etc. Or mainstream hip hop like Eminem, Pitbull and Drake. And let's not forget about the fact that Adele -- who has never dominated via catchy "pop" tracks -- is said to be releasing her comeback album this year.

Now more than ever, I feel like Gaga's best strategy for the next era or even for ARTPOP II is to venture away from EDM-drenched dance pop music and into progressive pop, stadium rock and other genres. It seemed like that was the next step for her, judging by the genres she touched upon in Born This Way, yet instead she reverted back to just elaborate on the same hyper-electronic "pop" music that made her famous to begin with. Overall, ARTPOP sounds more like a more polished version of The Fame than anything else. Granted, in this album Gaga did perfect the modern, electronic, dance pop genre. However, the kind of music she's making now almost feels dated given that the music trends happening today are completely different than they were before she went on her hiatus.

I feel that at this point, Gaga should just create the kind of music she feels like creating, rather than trying to create (or rather, recreate) the same kind of catchy "pop" music that she once used to dominate the charts in her effort to now dominate the charts again. The public is responding moderately to Do What U Want and it's getting decent radio play, perhaps because it's got that dark, seductive, R&B beat. But it's not the smash hit we know it should be, because the general public is just over Gaga right now. And honestly, that's natural, because any artist with a long career (as we all know Gaga will inevitably have) experiences their ups and downs. No one can sustain being consistently #1 forever. Look at Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Madonna, or even someone like Beyonce. In order to last in the music business, as an artist you have to accept the fact that you will never be the most popular artist with EVERY single one of your albums and EVERY single one of your singles.

I do think, though, that Gaga really needs to surprise people again. Constantly remixing Do What U Want to try to make it more sellable isn't really doing anything for her right now. What would impress people next, I feel, is if she did irreverent rock music or experimental alt-rock music. Or even jazz, or songwriter-dominated blues tracks (a la a more commercial version of something like Dope). Maybe even just releasing something completely irreverent like Jewels N Drugs as a single next would help. Would Jewelz N Drugs break the top 10? Almost definitely not, but even Do What U Want can't break the top 10 right now.

Either way, though, Gaga is in it for the long haul. The trials and tribulations of the ARTPOP era aren't going to seriously damage her career in the long-term.

I have faith in Venus if it is the 3rd single

Hi Saira! You probably don't remember me but I remember you modding the Charts section when I was just a new member here. It's nice to see you post again :)

Although you brought up some interesting points, that I for the most part agree with, there're some I have to counter.

Yes, I do feel like she should switch it up with her next album. But also, I just feel like she needs the right song from ARTPOP to click with the public.

Considering you've been busy, I don't know if you're aware that Applause was quite a success. It was her 12th Top 10 and stayed there for 14 weeks (yeah over 3 months ) and eventually became her 11th 2x Platinum single.

If Applause, a song from ARTPOP, can click with the public, then I don't see how another wouldn't be able to.

Yes, she should switch it up and get away from EDM, but for now, I say she sticks to releasing singles from ARTPOP. Who knows, we might get another 'Applause' performing single :)

It just hit me how beautiful and solid "Gypsy" is lyrically. She tells that story in such a compelling way.

probably her most beautiful song ever, IMO

Any word/clue about the next single? What are her next steps? I know nothing

Lots of people are speculating Venus due to her changing her name to Godess of Love.
