Hello Mr. Radio 45
Its really hard to believe Britney had more than 9 years in between her first US #1 and her second considering how big of a star she became. There were a lot factors at play there. Aside from the radio ban, I don't even know how songs reached #1. I can't imagine the CD single sales were ever that big in the US in the early 2000s. They may have been, but I don't remember ever seeing CD singles in stores. I think so much of it had to do with how you were doing on the radio. Thankfully iTunes now makes it really easy to have healthy single sales.

Spanish Eyes 2,033
Someone actually brought up a great point. Are there are Brit stans/experts who can elaborate her charting from like 2000-2004? That period was undeniably her peak overall, but she flopped left and right on the Hot 100.
Americano 31,061
There was something weird going on with Britney and radio though, as if they legit had a personal vendetta against her. There's more to it I know, but that wasn't just her releasing a bunch of flop singles.. It was sketchy.

Just to clarify! Haha But if Britney was able to hold so much cultural imapct without radio support, maybe Gaga doesn't necessarily need it. Just a thought. Americano 31,061
Britney Spears had something different going for her though, she was a generational icon because of her starting as one of those "Disney" stars. It's almost like Miley Cyrus, but more captivating and fresh. Lady Gaga is a huge break-out pop star, but I don't get the feeling that a generation is growing up and watching her exclusively like my entire generation seemed to be doing with Britney Spears. Lady Gaga is more of watched because she has to be watched, she's always doing something "crazy." I'm not discrediting Gaga. She's a cultural icon in her own right, and has had a huge impact while becoming the most famous person in quite awhile, but it's not really the same I feel. (I'm a former Britney stan, but I promise I'm level headed.)

I get your point but I'm sure there's a whole generation growing up with Gaga right now It's hard for you and for me to see that because ****, I'm 25 y.o. already =P it's not the same for us (I was also a former Britney stan). Something important to remember is that this is when TRL was big. People saw music videos on TV so her exposure was much greater.
JPM 781
I'll ask on ATRL about Britney's radio drama during the 2000-2004. This is a former BS fansite, they should know.
